Title: AAZ not starting after driving in hot weather

I have an AAZ in my 1987 Vanagon Westy Syncro, for 10 years now. Just the last few summers it has not wanted to start after driving in hot weather. I turn the key on and no juice to the starter. After it cools down for 1 to 2 hours, it starts right up and runs like a champ. Does anyone have an idea what this could be??? My mechanic is totally stumped.
