Title: cheap injectors and heat shields - 1.6 turbo diesel 88 Jetta
Post by: chrissev on August 18, 2004, 05:26:35 pm
Anyone know of the cheapest place to get some injectors and heat shields for my 88 turbo diesel Jetta?  VW stealership wants over $100 each.  This is too much.  I'd try to rebuild them but they have around 410,000km on them and I think it would be better to get new ones.  Engine was rebuilt at 350,000km.

There are almost always cheap injectors on eBay.

when you rebuild injectors the only old things you keep are the spring/shim and housing. the nozzel is replaced with a BRAND NEW NOZZEL, and for about $35 US each imjector can be rebuilt. i rebuild my own injectors then test them on my injector tester for proper spray and pressure. every once in a while the spring may need replacing, but i have spares out of other injectors that were not rebuildable but still had good parts.  now rebuilt starters and alternators are a different story, they are rebuilt with junk, nothing beats a NEW starter

hope this helps

actually Stan had it right

the whole injector is 31.28 with a 10.00 core

for just the nozzle its a little less than 10.00

it looks like they have good prices on alot of things.

HA! You're absolutely right too! I could have sworn that the option for "Diesel Inj. Nozzle" wasn't there yesterday, but that's great to know, I'll be buying a set. Do you guys know if this part number "D1001-13492" is the proper one for TD engines? In the car selection page I only saw an option for Jetta - Diesel, can I assume that covers the TD?

I just noticed now, on the actual injector page it says "except turbo", I wonder if that applies to the nozzle as well.

I almost ordered four of them then stopped b/c I don't know a couple of things:  1. are these injectors for turbo diesels or just NA diesels?  Is there a difference?
2. how do the injectors come apart?  Can I do it with normal tools or do I need a press or special tools?

Also, do the newer diesels have heat shields like the old rabbits did?  I've never had the injectors out of this car so don't know this.  I know with the rabbit when I replaced the injectors I had to replace the heat shields as well.

If I find out that I can take the injectors apart myself and that they are good for a turbo diesel I'll order them.

you can definitely take them apart with no special tools, replacing the nozzle is quite easy. They do use heat shields as well. If you find out they can be used on turbo's, please let us know, I'll buy a set too!

the only diff between the turbo and non is the breaking pressure.
which means spring tension.
but any time you open a set of these up you should have them calibrated to the same break pres.
if you dont have a pop-n-dribble tester a local diesel shop can do them pretty cheap.
but be careful I've heard of some outlandish prices being charged for a real simple job.
