Title: gaskets to go
Post by: samtheman on March 15, 2016, 07:34:09 pm
the head gasket just went on my 1983 quantum TD. I would like to upgrade to an MLS head gasket. Has anyone here had an MLS gasket made by Gaskets to Go? I have seen mention of them on the forums here but no one has ever commented on the quality or price. Their website seems outdated and a tad bit sketchy. Just looking for some input before I spend my hard earned $$
any thoughts or experiences are greatly appreciated!

Unless you are planning on having the block decked and the head machined I'd stick with a traditional fiber gasket. MLS gaskets need extremely flat surfaces to seal properly, they will not accept any imperfections at all. Fiber gaskets are a lot more forgiving. Lots of us have run significant amounts of boost on the fiber gaskets without issues - not overworking your turbo and not overheating your engine have a lot more to do with head gasket life than the material choice.

if you want an upgrade go for head studs

thanks for the heads up! I learn something new on here every day. I think I will stick with the fiber gasket, dont really want to spend money on getting it machined! I  have been eyeballing that ARP headstud kit for awhile now, and i think those will do just fine. I disabled the overboost protector and have a boost controller rigged up but have been waiting to reinforce the motor so it will handle a little extra boost. Will a new fiber gasket coupled with the ARP head studs handle about 18 or 20 lbs of boost?

yeah, i think even stock bolts would have no issue holding 20psi

I did 20+ for a few years and quite a few mountain passes with stock bolts and a fiber gasket. Studs are a great upgrade though and are reusable (which also means resellable)
