Title: aaz passat fuel knock and poor idle
Post by: nkb on April 06, 2006, 11:45:55 pm
First off i have to say this is the best message board ive seen yet so maybe you guys can help me with this problem thats been driving me nuts for the last month.
ive been driving this 93 passat diesel with 380k since last december with no problems at all, started fine in the coldest weather untill i took it on a long road trip to montreal from nova scotia. i got there with no probleems at all got over 1200km on a single tank. on the way back it was lacking power on the hills a little but nothing too big, i stopped to strech my legs and when i started my car after only sitting for 30 min it was knocking like it had no rod bearings at all and blowng huge clouds of whitish smoke and a very irregular idle that went away as soon as i got back on the highway, after i did the other 600 km of the trip back with no problems of over heating or knocking my fuel mileage dropped to just over 1k and the next morning i noticed i had a large amount of water in my filter and even some sitting in the banjo fitting on the ip.
today i installed my gtd nozzles hoping it would fix all my problems, needless to say it didn't.
the fuel knock is totally gone but my idle still jumps from around 1k rpm to  1500rpm after warm up and my acceleration is very choppy, my question finally is could my ip be shot from all the water? i don't know where it all came from, im talking about a full filter of water here, it was frozen solid, or is there possably something stuck in my ip from the water sitting around in my pump??? please help, im stuck driving my gf's sbox civic and i hate hondas!!!!

Theres a good possibility that the water in fuel is affecting somthing inside your inj pump causing the idle to surge.See if you can get your hands on some Stanadyne "lubricity formula" or even some "preformance" formula from stanadyne as well. Most diesel fuel inj shops keep this product and its one of only a very few addatives that actually helps and works.

Also it sounds like your going to have to somehow drain the fuel tank as it may have more water that can stay there for along time and cause you ongoing problems.

Where do you suspect you got the bad fuel from?small service station?

you could also try draining the pump,by maybe pulling off the advance cover, and letting it pour out????gotta get that crap outta there before it makes rust, water settles to the bottom,so try the advance cover deal maybe

Could your crank pulley be going south ? It will cause similar syptoms.

the pully would cause it to act up that much? it was like that ever since my brother took it off and hit a little pin on the timing gear itself and i didn't bother to really try to get it back on right, that was approx 25k ago and it just started doing this all at once.
my the needle in my nozzles were stuck in so hard that the top just snapped off trying to take it apart.
am i gonna have to haul this motor out?
if theres water in mu pump it probably rusted it up good by now, its been sitting for over a month

I don't understand where the water is coming from?  What was in your rad, coolant, water or mix?  Could this be a head gasket issue?

i think the water was from condensation from the warm days and cold nights of last winter, and from me not checking the seperator.
the headgasket was changed around 25k ago too.
i think im gonna pull the motor and get my crank done for the tdi gear.

And when you got this headgasket changed their was no power issues after?  I could see the knocking sound being an injector issue.  If you have air in your lines you will get the same sound from what I've found.  Do you really think you can generate enough condensation to fill the line though?

i started driving the car mid december last year and it worked great, lots of power. the whole time i owned it i never checked the seperator, i didn't even know it was there this being my first diesel.
the injectors i changed hoping to fix the whole problem but only stopped the knocking, now it runs rough when cold and after it gets up to temp i still have to have the cold start pulled to drive the car at all, and its guttless.

if anyone runs into this problem, don't be stubborn like me, just check the damn crank pulley, mine was moving like 5 deg on the crank and that translates into 10 in the cam and injector pump, i slapped a new pulley on today and started up instantly and idled perfectly (actually after a bit of pump tweaking because of the gtd injectors) thanks guys for all the suggestions!! next time i will listen a little better!! now that it runs time to jank it out for the tdi heheh

A lot of guys will never believe the crank issue will cause driveability problems like mentioned above. Most guys just think they snap and quit.

If you see ANY signs of driveability problems, shut it off and get it checked before it lets go and ruins the motor.
