Title: And then this fell out...
Post by: mapper on October 12, 2015, 05:06:46 pm
Hi All,

This is my first post and I want to kick off by saying what a great resource I've found this site. I really appreciate the expertise and experience that's captured here.

My task, I'm rebuilding a 1.6 td JM engine. If successful, my plan it to put it in my jetta and pull the aaz from that for my van.
This is my first rebuild and I've hit a snag I want to fix before I bolting up the head, etc. During the tear down early in the year this guy dropped out the engine as I rotated it on the stand. Anyone recognize it? Can you tell me where it belongs?

Thanks,

Steve

That's pretty weird right there. It certainly isn't a factory VW part. I don't think VW used a single nylock anywhere on the engine itself....

I've pulled quite a few 1.6TD engines down to their most basic bits and have never seen that part.

Is that some kind of expansion plug? Definitely not a vw part as was mentioned already. I'd check the external oil passage bores and make sure the proper plugs are in place.

Thanks guys. I took it apart. It's not clear in the photo, but there's fine mesh on the nut and a spring a small bearing inside. Seems like its a tappet. I had thought it was associated with the intermediate shaft, but couldn't see how. I'll set it aside.

Cheers,

Steve

Hmmm.... spring and ball bearing inside sounds like a check valve. Perhaps some sort of over-pressure relief.

Pressure control valve from power steering pump..  Look for spring too!

Nice.  How'd that get in the engine?

Makes you wonder how well his power steering is working doesn't it?

Impressive bit of ID'ing.  Thanks Renxx

I pulled the rocker cover and oil pan before stripping down the engine... wanted to check the cam and crank before getting too much time into it. My guess is the spring  and Murphy's law did the rest when I disconnected the power steering hose.

Thanks again
