Hey guys, I have an aaz swapped mk2 and I've noticed it really smells like crank case gas in my car lately, everything is in place and it doesn't appear to leak. Could it be that doughnut thing on top needing replacement?
Thanks, ian

Probably exhaust leaking into the car. Did you replace all the gaskets before install? Valve cover leaking onto the exhaust? Many options, start the car and look to see if there is any smoke being made under hood, if there is find where and fix

There's no visible smoke, and no leaks from the valve cover. The all the gaskets are new, the only possible leak spot would be from the questionable joint at the end of my downpipe right under the shifter. However I drove with only the downpipe and it wasn't this bad or quite the same smell

could be smell/ccgas getting into the fresh air intake and thru the vents, or exhaust, good bet its exhaust; although cc gasses smell different and are less over-powering than exhaust gasses. if you have egr,,check pipes&gaskets, check also other gaskets, or for rust(holes).

What type of MK2 ? Ive noticed that if the hatch seal on MK2 is old/ not a good fit when you roll your windows down somehow exhaust smell gets circulated into the interior of the car

It's a 2 door golf

That could be it but I don't think it's exhaust, it's definitely a different smell

I'd get under it and look for any new oil leaks, displaced heatshields or signs of errant exhaust gasses heating/burning parts or coatings.

check both intake manifold& exhaust manifold for oil, that is usually the valve/cam cover gasket or something like a cover that wont seal,, im thinking it could be block/cam cover vent/system, trace vent breather system, oil leaking on intake manifold can get burned off the ex manifold.
