Title: 2009 jetta TDI turbo failure?
Post by: Connect123896 on July 25, 2015, 09:27:30 am
Hello ! ,I was driving my TDI the turbo was whining then boom it ate all of its oil and gas both blue and white smoke, intercooler hoses had oil the turbo shaft has lots of play and boost side turbine is torn up bad it also went into engine workshop. I got it home and it idles great but it revs veryyyyy slow and the tube that goes from the valve cover to the turbo intake seems to belch a lot of oil (high crankcase pressure) also the tube that runs from the bottom of the turbo intake is filled with oil and it won't drain. I know for sure it needs a turbo but I'm concerned weather it has another issue that is causing the oil to belch from the valve cover breather with lots of pressure. I don't want to replace the turbo if it has a catastrophic issue that is causing the high crank pressure

Check compression. It's not uncommon to bend a rod when a turbo goes like this.

Update , I don't have a compression tester that goes above 300 psi but i just got done messing with it , I took the exhaust off and started it (one of my first steps since the dpf light came on after the turbo went) and it started and idled great the breather had a lot less pressure and no oil coming out of it the turbo shaft actually snapped in half and the compressor side turbine ground down oil was still being thrown out of the exhaust side as the seals are of coarse shot, but it still revved really slow , maybe because of the dead turbo ? It barely spun. Does it seem like the engine is blown ? If so I probably won't fix it. But it seems to run pretty good idling

Maybe it revs so slow because of the workshop mode ? When I was driving it and it went to workshop it took 5 mins to get to 60

I am also having a hard time getting the turbo out , anyone have a good write up? Also how would I clean out the dpf from all the oil

I am thinking limp mode could have something to do with it. 09s are really beyond my level of knowledge though.

Pull the glow plugs out and look for mechanical damage
