Title: 1.6td wont start
Post by: grizzlygary on May 18, 2015, 04:24:01 pm
Okay so im new to this forum first off hello everyone. So i bought a 1992 1.6td golf and it ran perfect when i drove it home and also the night of, than i went to start it up in the morning only to find it would not fire at all. So than i set out and bought new glow plugs and tried to gravity feed it to see if any air was in the lines and surely enough that was fine too (cracked injector lines at injectors and tightened back up when i was done) solenoid on pump works fine as well. I checked to see if the belt slipped but it was nice and new and tight. What is going on here?

Thanks

Is it smoking while you crank?

It is, i pulled the cold start and it sounded like only 2 cylinders would fire after alot of cranking

Are you sure all of the new glow plugs are getting 12 VDC?  Is the fuse on the firewall blown?  Did the PO fab up individual wires for the plugs?

Sounds like you have fuel to all injectors but lacking heat enough on a cold morning to make it go bang.

With a tight belt I wouldn't expect poor timing as it was running fine previously.

Blow a gasket maybe?

I should check if plugs are getting 12v and it hasnt been cold when trying to start it at all. Could be the headgasket but i couldnt imagine it just blew wide open the night before

i find i need a shot of glowplugs even when its 90f out. can hot wire gps, run a cable from +term to gp buss bar, careful not to short out, have someone to crank as you gp.

It could have some air trapped in it. The thermo valve on the fuel filter doesn't allow fuel (and as a result air) back to the tank until the fuel temp reaches a certain temp. You can try bleeding the injection lines again, or keep cranking, or have someone pull start you.

Make sure the glowplugs are getting power first though. How tight did you install them? If you over-torque them you can kill them fast. Probably not 1 day fast though.

Ya it was the glow plugs its kind of a rats nest in there after the po installed hids and other silly things so i was looking at the wrong fuse

Glad ya got it, now fix the rats nest you won't be sorry.  Electrical gremlins love living in those places and these things have enough of them as it is.  Clean all grounds some afternoon and you will also not be sorry.  It is just good preventative medicine.
