Title: Swapping 1.6na for 1.9TD
Post by: mick111 on April 03, 2006, 09:59:14 pm
Betcha never heard that one before.

After a long, sordid ordeal with purchasing a 1.9 TD, allowing the guy i bought it from to put it in for me (didnt have a garage or driveway at the time), realising a month later while my caddy was still in pieces in his garage he didn't know what he was doing(actually i figured it out after 2 weeks or so :x), finally getting the car back and finding loose or missing hose clamps, bolts, nuts, getting it in running order then having the timing belt fall off while driving(Did you do the crank mod? Yeah, yeah i did. :x :x :x) I now have to swap my original 1.6na back into the car.

Sorry about the long post, i had to vent :)

Does anybody have any tips on engine swaps? This will be my first VW one, and i know its always the little things. I can't seem to get a straight answer from the guy on what clutch he put in when he did the swap, so is there any way to tell if the 1.6 will fit it?

Also, if theres anyone on here in seattle washington whos willing to swap me an engine hoist/vw specialty tools in exchange for yard work/cleaning/any labor that would be a godsend as i am broke after this whole deal.

Thanks a lot.

P.S. I hate to be negative, but do not have any dealings whatsoever with a man named David Wright from Longview, WA. you will regret it.

Wow,sorry to hear of your ordeal.

The swap should be pretty easy, just unbolt the 1.9L and drop in the 1.6L.Everything should bolt right up.The only problems may be the exhaust and alternator wiring.

I'd seriously condsider repairing the 1.9L,as it's so much more powerful, and has so much more potential.

Do you know what all is broken ? Have you opened it up yet ?

Yeah its a very very basic swap, luckily not much for wiring, and the coolant hoses etc are all very easy to deal with, I've swapped complete diesel engines in the same day with a replacement without breaking a sweat, its really really easy. Wnat to sell you blown 1.9? I'll buy it I am just north of you a couple hours.

I'm still trying to figure out how the timing belt fell off.

Are you actually in Seattle? I don't have tools I can give you but I may be able to help.

I hate to be a big vulture, but I'd like to buy the pump, turbo and manifolds from you.

I'd be willing to come down and swap the motors if I can keep the blown 1.9 :D

Hehe...that was going to be my offer

I have a bottom end that needs to be rebuilt and a good head so I'm on the lookout for a good bottom end.  :D
