Title: W terminal on alternator for tach signal
Post by: veritas137 on August 12, 2004, 07:56:15 pm
Was told that if my alternator has a W terminal on it, I can plug in a cluster with a tach and it will work.  Problem is I have no idea what this W terminal looks like.  Anyone have a pic or can tell me what I'm looking for?

needs to be a diesel tach... a gasser tach wont work. gasser tach is looking for a signal from the coil... sine wave vs. some whozamawhutzis and all that.

to be honest i havent looked for a W-terminal, dunno what it looks like to describe it... but i believe it should have either a W or a number stamped next to it. a "25" maybe?

if you have your alternator cracked open at a rebuild shop of some kind, they can usually tap into the signal you need and give you a terminal to hook up to... even if your alternator didn't originally come with one.

There should be a feed to the clocks already other wise the oil pressure warning system wouldnt work, just a case of sawpping the clusters over.

se my reply to this post: Switching gauge clusters (http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=324)
