Title: pistons
Post by: shelbot on November 29, 2014, 04:50:28 am
Hello I just had my head rebuilt and now about to do the bottom end. I bought a bunch of parts a few months back off a guy claiming everything was parts bought from vw. I didn't know very much and long story short I have these ARCO pistons that would be perfect for my build as I need this back together asap but I know if they are junk I'm going to regret it. If these are junk then what brands are strong enough to handle 20+ psi? Thanks!

The pistons are ok. I had them on a build I skimped on, but the rings seem to be garbage. I only would recommend the Goetze rings for any piston you go with. I don't like giving any $$$ to Prothe/hans/whatever else he goes by, but if you already have them you can use them. I went 20+ psi for 40,000 miles on mine.

Thanks. So i'm still having a hard time getting any pistons for my engine. I'm trying to go through lordco or bakers but neither are having any luck. So I guess I will throw these in for the time being and hope they last me 30,000 kms. I will be running 20psi on my t3, arp head studs, new bearings all around, seals ect. I can't even locate a victor rienz head gasket. I'm from Vancouver Island BC so things take a bit longer to get here also as the mail system is just silly! I would love any sites that I can direct buy from also any part numbers for the 86 1.6l td engine parts/gaskets. I'll keep sniffing around forums and the net but honestly I'm better behind a wrench than a keyboard. My searching skills are weak i'll admit.

Is this a 1.6TD?  If so then AutohausAZ has an excellent price on OS kolbenschmidt pistons.

I don't think an NA engine would be offended that the piston skirts have cutouts for oil squirters that aren't there, would it?

The cutouts wouldn't matter, but in his post he says he's planning on running 20 psi so I assumed either 1.6TD or AAZ.

Ah. Yeah, 1.6NA block should accept 1.6TD pistons with no issue though, which was all i was sayin.

Goetze makes an mls head gasket that will work fine for you. There is a part number in the faq section.

At least, in your 2nd post you refer to a 1986 1.6td? Mk2 hydro head and td or na block?
