Here's my dilemma. I really should have a strut bar that clears the intake pipe from the turbo to the filter box, but that just seems to be impossible. Nobody seems to make one that rises off the strut towers sharply enough. Soooo, does anyone make a flexible intake pipe that would replace my present VW piece? And no, I don't want to run a cone filter on a turbodiesel. The little truck is noisy enough now.

Mine clears, I have one of these:

But that's in a mk2 though.
A member here (gee-bee) makes the silicone intakes for sale by mk1autohaus (on ebay).
How bad does it really interfere? If it's just rubbing you could put some wire split loom around the strut brace tubes.

Hey Dubdoc,
Nice setup. I just finished swapping out my old 1.6D for a 1.9 Y into my pickup, had to re-plumb my air intake in the same general direction of yours. Put a cone filter I have on it temporarily, but yeah, it's louder than I want it to be. Want an airbox like the one you are using, what should I be looking for?
-
That looks like a mk1 turbo airbox, it would have come on turbo-diesel Jettas 1981-1984 or thereabouts as long as its a turbo mk1 car.
I have seen people adapt mk2 boxes with a little creativity.

Thats a mk1 td airbox round to oval
Iam making the mkii intake now
round to round
two variations based on turno inlet
t/3 or ko3
Mine will be one outlet as iam building a ahu/aaz motor for the caddy that just came out of complete paint and int.

OR, mark with a chalk line where it rubs, heat up that part of the intake pipe with a heat gun, apply a dowel or pipe to the softened plastic to make an indentation. Won't measurably affect air flow and will solve the problem.
Those are some good looking and not expensive braces.
Raceland is local to me so i will probably go with their product for the lower stress bar. Their upper bar looks sketchy to me tho:
http://www.racelandus.com/strut-bars/vw-strut-bars/volkswagen-golf-mk1strut-bar.html
Only fiddy bucks, and i can walk into the warehouse and buy one. But i fear that if i grabbed it with my hand i could wrench it every which way, and i've got a lot less torque than the car does.
And, i can't find their lower front bar on their website anymore. bugger.
The suspension debacle with my '84 coupe pains me. I am used to a GTI with big front and rear sway bars and multiple stiffening braces. The rear end of a mk1 jetta is probably plenty stiff but this thing is going to feel like a skate board. There aren't even any sway bars on it. So I'm looking at front and rear sways, at a minimum a 'rocco K-bar under the front but if i can't find that a 4-point, and the upper front stress bar. gonna be a lot of money. And that's assuming i'm happy with the struts and springs.
No point in a rear stress bar in the jetta. back seat metalwork is so close to the towers that there is no reason.

Accuracy check, K03 wasn't used until MK3.
MK1 got the T3 and K24.
MK2 got T3, K24 and K14
MK3 AAZ got K14, T2, K03 - MK3 AHU/1Z got a different K03.
-
I make these for the ko3 also, both versions of snorkels
k03/ k04 hybrid arent that bad
The i.d. is smaller for the turbo
