I have a 1.6 Diesel engine and transmission I would like to put in the newest vw car I can find. The engine and trans are out of a 1991 Jetta. I am thinking 1998 is as far as I can go. I am willing to change mounts if I am able to get into a newer Car.

Any Mk3 will work great, just use the 2.0 mounts.

Not sure what is considered mk3 what years would that be? Would that include the new early bug?
-
Just look it up on Google looks like 1993-1999
-
Is the 1999.5 different
-
The 99.5 is a Mk4, which uses a totally different type of engine mount system. There are no provisions on the 1.6 for the Mk4 platform mounts.
And yes, a Mk3 is 1993-1999. If you are going that route an AAZ car (Canada only) is a straight drop in, absolutely everything is the same. If you can't find one of those the ABA cars are your next best bet. They will have the correct clutch and gear shift linkages already.

What about the 1998 bug is that a mk4 ? That would be ideal, I have my eye on one that has been sitting out behind a guys garage for a long time.
-
The Beetle is a Mk4. The Mk4 platform was designed specifically for the Beetle, so it was the first car released using all the new stuff.

Ok thanks for the info
-
Just rember it will fail all emissions... Nothing newer then 92 in usa... Can be idi or tdi-m... Then 96 goes to tdi e...
-
Depends n where you live. In massachusetts there are no emission tests on vehicles 1997 and older
-
No testing done in Michigan
-
I have one more question are the older passers mk 3 cars? I can't find any info on them.
-
The B4 Passats are mechanically very similar to the Mk3 (or A3 as they are also called). I don't know the cutoff years for the B4 but basically anything you can do with a Mk3 you can do with a B4.

Ok thanks I am going to look for a early Passat and see what the engine bay looks like. I have a 1.6 with a ff transmission allready to transplant into a newer car. Looking right now on CL for a deal on a car with a blow engine or transmission. I am hoping to find something for around 700-1000. I put a Diesel engine in a 1985 gas Jetta so I am sure I can swap to a newer VW. Thanks

What you are proposing is actually illegal across the USA in it's entirety. It's a federal law, you can go the other direction (newer engine into older car) but not backwards, as a 1982 engine would not likely meet the 1998 emissions standards of the vehicle it's going into. Now, enforcement of this matter seems to be left up to the individual states, and in some cases, individual counties or cities, meaning this isn't enforced in many areas, but keep in mind it's something that could theoretically land you in trouble even if you're lucky to live in an area with no emissions testing or vehicle inspections to speak of.
The 1.6 diesel is going to be underpowered (they're underpowered in their original applications) in a 1990s Passat that weights 3,100 lbs compared to the 1,900 lbs that VW golf came in, over half a ton more! I think you would have a hard time meeting highway speeds unless the engine is seriously modified. So while the engine meets the chassis in the right places on cars made up to 1999, it isn't practical.
I have a 1992 Jetta GLI (same as a GTI) with a 1.6 turbo diesel in it along with some other upgrades and custom interior work. The GTI/GLI models had all the cool upgrades and my car feels sufficiently modern and comfortable while still having the simple, economical 1.6 diesel, which I think is what you're looking for... so I would go that route, a nicer mk2 (such 1992 was the last year) chassis, the diesels were usually stripped down basic models. It does lack some things like airbags however... but is only a bit heavier (around 250 lbs) than the mk1 models were, and I think a bit safer and more comfortable.

If you use a passat your transmission will not work. All passats are cable shift with a hydraulic clutch. You can use the 16v transmission or a tdi one but it won't be a very good match gear ratio wise.
