Title: Looking for an AAZ thermostat cover/water outlet - with pictures
Post by: JimEG on January 25, 2014, 07:51:12 pm
Looking for a replacement for the water outlet cover that came off of my AAZ. I would be more than thrilled to find a source for a metal one, but would be happy to even find a plastic(nylon?) one. Also, if a cover with a straight out exit exists, that would work too. I've ordered a couple replacements which I thought were close, or the same - but no luck. Been stumbling around on Rock Auto, Ebay and Google with no luck. Hoping to be enlightened here. Thanks.

The part number on the cover is as follows - 2171 top line, ZA second line, 22S 121 121.

Here are some pic's -

Bottom one in this row. The other ones are different !4 variations used and the new ones I purchased that were wrong.

Bottom one. The top one is one that looked close, but not quite. It is for a 1.8 Golf.

I would look at the wreckers....
I got an aluminum one from an older VW at the wreckers.......can't recall the vintage or model [ it was years ago ], I was getting parts from 1.6's and 1.5's that day, so it would have been from one of those.

I use a straight out exit one on my AAZ in a Vanagon. The part number is 038 121 121  My brother could order you one, its not on his website but I know he can get it for $10. Send him an email with the part number if you want one: [email protected]

What hose are you using with this outlet? Is this a 50-degree install? I've not found a suitable flange for my Syncro, either. I did just buy this one, I hope this solves my fit issues, using a JX-based silicone hose set.

What is the middle flange from, and do you still have it? This might solve my JX hose fit problem... I had to chop off the end and splice on a 90-deg corner.

I've posted this a few places:

$20 and 5 minutes later, you couldn't ask for a better fit...

Yes it's a 50 degree install. I am not exactly sure on the measurements but you can see in this picture it has a 90 degree hose which I believe is an 1" 1/4" and that gets reduced to the 1"  steel factory line. Also you can see the reducer coming off the bottom of the expansion tank, and the plug for the oil cooler upgrade. Like I said I am not sure about those diameters and I don't know if these are JX hoses or not.
