Hey folks,
On my mk1 Jetta 1.6td - I will be changing over from an auto trans to a 5 speed over March Break. ( vs spending my Break somewhere warm and where the yeast based liquids flow freely & cheaply :'()
I have bought a pretty ripe 1980 Can., german built Rabbit na diesel 5spd for the conversion donor ( pedals\shifter\trans etc). I was planning on pulling the engine\ auto trans out of my mk1 jetta, then installing the donor standard trans on the engine and the dropping the whole drivetrain back in.
I'm assuming that it would be a lot easier to assemble\changeover the trans on the garage floor vs in the car. I do have access to a shop with floor hoists\ engine hoist etc.
Any suggestions or words of wisdom?
Also, I do have access to at least one mk2 diesel 020 trans ( maybe 2). Should I be looking at the trans ratios\codes to see which one will suit my needs? I drive mostly city but occasional highway, but I do make 5-12 hr highway road trips every few months. I did find that the 1.6td with the 010 was reving far too at 100-120kph (60- 70ish mph)
thanks

I have the CHD 020 in my car, i believe the other diesel 020 is DFQ, not 100% sure though. My 1.9td in mk3 revs at 3900rpm going 110kmh on the highway. First gear is veeerrry short lol. Hope this helps :)

Hey E.pickle
Thanks for the reply! I'd like to keep the revs down on the highway and am surprised at your rpms at 110. I was hoping for a lowish 3 k at that speed in the mk1?
Although my last ride - "super car #1" a 98 jetta tdi would rev low on the highway. ( like 3300 rpm at 120 kmph?)
Maybe my expectations are unrealistic?

ps I used to spend some time in Windsor and Detroit during the late 80's - as a friend was taking is P.Eng from the the U of Windsor. Lots of fun, and also cross border activities.

do you have the trans codes for the 2 transmission u have available??? i would go with what ever is taller, around town u can always just stick to lower gears...

That large, heavy throttle cable out of the automatic is worth some money (if in good shape) to someone who needs one as I don't think they have been available for a lot of years. Don't throw it away.

Thanks for the heads up.
Do you mean the cable from the pedal to the trans, or the cable from the trans to the ip?
-
trans to ip. i think the other one is the same as any other mk1 automatic.

myself personally, i like the mk2 gasser econo-box trannies…
3.67 final drive, and .75 fifth gear…
some of the best ratios of any VW trans..

the 1980 ff 5 speed is 3k @72mph with 185/60-14s..
you gotta change steering rack too.. and all the diesel auto parts $$$ you also have goofy coolent hoses on the tranny to eliminate

the shift linkage is mounted to the steering rack

You guys have a great way of ruining a guy's Fri. aft ;)
I'll have to check out the donor Rabbit I have for the bracket location on the rack - because I just checked the rack of my jetta and there seeming to be some sort of brackety thing in the middle of my rack - between the 2 mounting pts of the rack.
-
I think it is 3 threaded holes cast into the rack body in the area you say it looks like something is there.

Yes!!

not on a mk1..... 2 tabs, 1 slotted thats vertiicle, one wth hole thats horizontal, the studs of the verticle rod go thru the holes...
if the rack was ever replaced, unless sed auto rack, they all came with tabs...
2nd pia... auto bunny gotta go down out the bay, so gotta remove exhaust... the auto and master have room issues to go up..

Hey CRSMP5,
I'm not sure what you mean by the above? I was going to yank the whole drivetrain, but for the interests of the KISS principle, I am thinking about just leaving the engine in, then pulling the 010 and dropping in the 020.
I'm running a K03 on my 1.6,and have a custom down pipe. Which I'm thinking might interfere with my shifter linkage.....
thanks

Be sure to check out the brake boosters. Both cars are German-made, so there shouldn't be a problem. But on USA-made Rabbits vs. Jetta/Convertible/Scircco, there is a difference in the boosters, which means you may need to replace the master with the booster and the pedal pack.

Thanks for the heads up, the rabbit is a made in Germany, so I'm assuming the pedals and stuff will line up?

nk it was last year we went thru his parts from this fit that thread...
the rack has tabs not threaded bolt holes.. bolt holes that are threaded are mk2...

And while you're in there... ;D
Think hard about re-enforcing the spot on the firewall the clutch cable goes through.
They break and are an annoyance to fix later.
