Title: Engine swap golf mk1 gti --> 1.6td?
Post by: polo_td on January 11, 2014, 01:21:44 am
Hi

At the moment am building a new car a glof mk1 gti -83.
info and pics here but in swedish sorry :)

The thing is that I now need your help.
I have never changed the machine in this way before in a golf and I know there are good people here.

I will put in a 1.6TD from golf mk2 in this car. Engine code at the moment is JR.
But i also have a SB engine standing on a shelf and i really need your advice and thoghts on pros ´n cons of these 2 engines.
Why go for the JR instead of SB?

But what I'm wondering is blah this with electricity.

I 'd love to have a tachometer that works in the instrument.
On the car sits the std instrument , I think the signal to the tachometer taken from the ignition coil.
Wonder if I can take this signal directly from the generator or if I have to "fix " the signal in any way.
someone who fixed this ?

Can you take the whole engine wire harness from the mk2 gtd and move over to the mk1 ? is there suitable contacts/connectors against the fuse box ?

then its the fuel supply , the high pressure fuel pump, take it away or keep? Should I put in a low pressure pump that runs continuously ?

If anyone has a list of what is needed in more depth , I would appreciate this very much.
Welding etc no problems, but all that I can find out and know before the " operation " would help .

just a clarification. i´ve already read the FAQ´on how to modify the original tacho to a W terminal. but what happens if you take the hole cable harness from a olf mk2 thet already have the tach in the instrument working?

I am not sure, but if the tach is all you want to work you should only have to add the W terminal to your alt and add one wire to from there to the cluster...if it is a true diesel tach cluster. That should be much easier than swapping a harness and I don't know what would work with the MK1 vs MK2
