Title: So I almost bought a turbo.. 45 trim OM617 T3.. NOW HOLSET
Post by: 8v-of-fury on September 25, 2013, 06:11:48 pm
I am inquiring what manifold I will need to make this work. As soon as you google anything to do with Mercedes, only w116 and w123 stuff comes up.. NOTHING TO DO WITH ITS TURBO..

Apparently Mercedes used three flanges on their old stuff pre-1995 ish.

T3 Flange
Used on most Mercedes 3L/3.5L engines til 1995.
T25 Flange
Used on 2.5L engines til 1995.
Late 90s MB Flange
I'm not sure what the real name for this is. At some point in the late 90s MB switched to this for the OM606 turbo and the Sprinter OM602. It is triangular, with a round opening in the middle.

This .45 trim Garrett T3 I am pretty sure has a t3 exhaust flange on it.. of course the ebay ad says nothing and the pictures don't show it.

If it is off the om617 I would say you are probably looking at the T3 flange. Ask the seller the question and see. When did they start doing the T25 sized?

I'l be needing to make a new downpipe.. so I  figured I would stick with a v band on the down pipe to turbo connection. And do a brace back to the block or whatevs lol.

Depends what happens with the HE221W on the IDI if I am going to use it or my 2256v on the M TDI jeep. I have almost a year before deciding and I already have the 2256v so that is what I am going to do unless this holset is too amazing to not have on the Jeep. Jeep is a heavy turd compared to our cars though and that is why I am thinking quicker spool of the vnt. I plan to have rods with the girdle and such so big turbo won't be an issue I hope.

The holset seems like a complete no brainer to me.. really.

Thr T3 is antiquated.. and for money spent I would be close to the same amount to do either. So I am going to save my pennies and get a Holset HE211W.

Heck. Yes.

For the price and what u get the holset is an amazing deal.  Anything comparable from garrett would be atleast 1000,  and tho comparable i dont think it would compare

I have to chuckle a bit when I randomly find one of my pics online.  The top flange is from an OM603 ('87), the second is from an OM602 ('90) and the third is from an OM606 ('99).  The latter is currently slated to be installed on my Vanagon ALH swap
