Title: ALH block. Mech 1.6 IDI - doable?
Post by: vdubspeed on August 30, 2013, 11:30:46 am
I'm starting to acquire a good amount of spares. I bought an 00 Jetta TDI with the blown t-belt that has sat for 5 years and the owner lost the head. I have plenty of 1.6 IDI heads around.

I was thinking of building a super hybrid just for laughs and giggles.

From my understanding I will have pretty insane compression but other than that...it's cool?

I've read about AAZ and other 1.9 motors with 1.6 heads but not an ALH block. I have the turbo too so I could toss it a little boost to cool it down:)

Thanks,

Jason

I think the coolant passages and such are different on the alh and things wont line up. What pistons would you use? Also have to figure out what to do for injection pump.

mechanical 1.6 has one less oil drain, if you plug the extra drain in the block and use a 1.6 mechanical head gasket it would all bolt together.  compression would actually be extremely low.

The 1.6 head will bolt up to an AHU, but not an ALH.

1.6 mechanical head gasket:

ALH head gasket:

They are very different, not even close.  If an AHU block were bolted to a 1.6 head, then the compression would be very low, probably close to a gasser.

If you used TDI pistons you'd have the combustion chamber still in the piston as well as the precup in the head..

I agree you would probably end up as a higher compression gas engine.. That you'd need to run on lubed up 100 octane. lol . The TDI is already down to 19.5:1, add that massive pre-chamber in there as well.. I dunno

and the compression woul dbe completly screwed with tdi pistons in idi head..

Just have to plug the extra drains, no big deal.

What??? Its aome crazy engine that makes no sense to assemble but i still wouldnt mind seeing it happen just to see what happens

Well I plugged a hydro block and a mech head when I built a hybrid 1.6 IDI so I'm not worried about blocking ports.

I think as time allows I will put the two side by side and see what the real no B.S. stopping points are.

As for compression...that's the major pitfall as I cant just changed that.

dude it wont work the front oil drain on an alh is square.

Notice with your first comment:

Your tone was not certain. Key word is "think"

Then a picture of two headgaskets are posted and then your tone becomes firm:

dude it wont work the front oil drain on an alh is square.

I'm sorry, but I do not share in your blatant dismissal of the idea. I'm sure when Rudolph diesel said he was going to build a compression fired engine he was told it wouldn't work either.

So yeah, blocking the front oil plug on the head will be easy. As for the square part...that will take more ingenuity but by no means a deal breaker.

Now compression...that's what worries me. As for what injection pump, definitely the original IDI pump.

look at the headgaskets not the same shape. I'm all for making new things and creativity. I just think yoy ought to shift in anither direction with your creative energy.  8) I wasn't meaning to dissmiss your creative thinking.

basically what in saying is try it with an ahu will make a little more sense.

I agree the earlier 1.5, 1.6 and 1.9 D's share the block with the AHU.. So it'd be only compression holding you up at that point.

hes just trying to do something silly with junk he already has laying around.  a solution for the front oil drain, which would be pretty time consuming to make, would be to make a little block of metal that is shaped the same as the alh oil drain, then drill a hole in it to line up with the 1.6 drain, then goop up the sides of it and hammer into the alh block.  seems to becoming too much work just to slap some silly engine together at that point tho.

List in order of Bang for Buck (greatest to least) for using an ALH block and 1.6 mechanical head.

1.  eBay
2.  scrap
3.  art
4.  donate to science
5.  boat anchors
6.  practice welding and machining skills
7.  charge a dollar per swing of a sledge hammer at the county fair (wear your safety glasses)
8.  see how far you can throw them
9.  drop them in the front yard, front door or driveway of an enemy
10.  (last and least) build an engine

haha if it were my block i would have already done #1
