Heres a few snapshots of a fairly clean 1985 golf shell I picked up recently. It spent almost its entire life in Virginia. For 200,000 miles on the clock it only had one real rust hole where the battery tray used to be so I welded in a new panel ;) It came with a set of KW coilovers and recaro interior. Ill post more pics as this project progresses.

Aaaand done! Well almost :)

The engine is the 1.6 NA from my 87 golf that rotted out. There were a few other oddball parts that I swapped from the donor vehicle as well. I removed the coilovers and put a set of Bilstein HD struts on all the way around with Moog Cargo springs. This was done in hopes of having the suspension last longer than 2 years and to drive the car through the winters of New England.
I removed the 2 1/4 inch exhaust due to the fear of the clamps coming loose while driving down the road and replaced it with the Bosal exhaust system I had on the Donor vehicle for 4 years.
I wired the glowplug system into the Gas fusebox so I could heat the glowplugs exactly like the stock diesel Golf. ANd I went a little crazy and converted the VDO gas tachometer to a Diesel Tachometer. I still need to calibrate it though as it shows 2000 rpm's at idle.
There was a little wobble from the tires when I first drove it but that must have been from the flat spots that developed from the car sitting for almost 3 years in total between the previous owner and when I owned it. The car probably needs a front end alignment and I know it needs me to install the front sway bar.(The previous owner removed it so he could get maximum lowering....) Other than the small nit picky things like the windsheild wipers that were installed crooked by the previous owner and the very slight rust around the rear quarter glass and the need for a new paint job other than the black spray paint that it currently sports now Im happy with it.

need any parts... I am breaking down a rust bucket mk2 jetta...
-
vwroadkill, Im all set in the parts department as I still have the rotted out golf donor shell :)
Ill list some slight issues Ive had with the vehicle since Ive been driving it. The windshield wipers were stripped from the linkage. So instead of replacing the assembly like I should have I just tack welded those suckers on ;D I recently wired up the reverse lights as the 85 wiring harness had the large 8 prong plug and my transmission had the 2 prong plug.
I had more lighting issues when the marker/blinker stop working due to water buildup is the lens....No amount of di-electric grease could have prevented this. I ended up fixing the issue with a new bulb.
Now a new issue with the headlights. The previous owner wired up the headlights backwards so when the "highbeams" are suppose to be on the "low beams" are on. This worked fine until one day the low beams (which are actually the highbeams) stopped working. Im guessing either corrosion/melted/loose wire at this point. Ill find out this weekend.
-
Turns out the low beam 10amp fuse melted instead of blowing...Still no voltage the fusebox.... Time to chase wires...

So after quite a few years of the serpentine on 3 bolts and 2 brackets later Im switching to a v-belt setup from an mk-1. The serpentine bracket has become unobtainium even from the dealer. So $150 and 3 hours later I have the complete non/ac setup from an mk1. I may have to switch to a 40mm hub if I dont have the proper waterpump pulley...
-
What a living nightmare. The place I went to in Hudson Ma had a complete setup from one of the early 1.6 engines. My engine lacked a crucial mounting point for the bracket. Also the waterpump pulley was for a 40mm pump and my pump is 30mm. I ended up grabbing the bracket from my cousin's caddy pickup thats been sitting for 6 years in a field. I also happened to dig out a waterpump pulley that was 30mm and the correct offset. So between The junkyard in Hudson; my cousin's truck ; and the pile of vw parts that came with my red vw 7 years ago; I pieced together a setup that appears to be working. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

3 years and 100,000 miles later still going strong

-1 degree Fahrenheit the other day. Managed to get the beast started :)

Well almost 5 years later and Im still driving the Golf. Im splitting the miles on my 50 mile commute between the Golf and a 1990 Cutlass supreme when the Golf is broken :)
Recently I drove my sister's 2010 honda fit on the highway and noticed the wind wanted to blow it off the road. My 34 year old Golf does not have this issue. Guess they do not test new economy cars in wind tunnels anymore
-
Well Ive been driving the car less this year due to various issue. Replaced the headgasket, timing belt, alternator, delivery valves, injectors and injector lines. At nearly 400,000 miles the exhaust snapped in half at the end of my 47 mile commute to work. Time to break out the mig welder again
-
What is with the welder? What happened to tin cans and bailing wire with a touch of muffler tape thrown on for good measure?
-
If I could get away with it I would. The problem is the entire downpipe rotted out at the seems on the entire length then broke free. I figure while the whole thing is apart Im putting a resonator so highway speeds will be bearable without going deaf.
-
I agree with the resonator. I tried a Rabbit without one for a time driving 4.5 hrs on the highway commute and was deaf from the drumming in the ears by the end of the ride. Put on the extra piece and was never sad I did that.
-
Not bad for its age.
-
Well Its been a few months. I really do need to get around to welding up the exhaust.
-
I should add the heatercore has been replaced so i wont freeze this winter. Only took me 6 years to get around to it :)
-
Odometer broke at around 399,000 miles ;D
-
Surely you can manually get another mile on it for an even 400K!
-
Im glad I installed the tdi starter on this thing. Made the 16 degree Fahrenheit cold start possible last night.
-
In other news if you have an 85 golf and the rear wiper relay burns out a #53 horn relay works just as well
-
Welp the pipe over the axle decided to rot out...Made a patch with exhaust tape and a clamp in autozone parking lot but I really need to replace the whole setup as the rot is not looking pretty on the pipes...
-
Got tired of the old non/ac tentioner so I added a gear from a vw mk2 gas motor tension-er. Soooo much easier to tighten the belt now

-
Fabbed up a new exhaust downpipe as nobody sells one for a mk2 with the doughnut exhaust flange anymore. Welded in the hyundai resonator I had sitting around so the golf would still be nice and quiet on the highway. Made an 80 mile trip for the first time in 3 months since battling the strut tower rot and repair. The 40 year old car still drives better than the honda fit I own.
-
The Golf definitely does not get driven as much as it used to anymore. At this point there is a bunch of little things that need attention
-rot around the wheel wells
-the main coolant metal pipe needs replacement
-the paint is sad
-rot in the spare wheel well needs to be addressed
- the axles need replacing after 100k and vibrate something awful after a few minutes
On a positive note it still starts up after sitting for months on end. Not in terrible condition for a car built in December of 1984 and has over 400k miles. There are no vw mk2's left in this area so Ill keep patching the rust and continue driving the beast
-
Figured out the vibration issue was a stuck Mk3 Caliper after installing a new driver side CV axle. New Driver side caliper and new front brake pads and all is well. Replaced a passenger side balljoint as the other one is not quite worn out yet. I replaced the original coolant pipe as it was very rusty. I upgraded to the aluminum style head outlet from a Porsche 944. Same part numbers and no more worrying about the plastic cracking. I'll replace the front coolant flange that goes to the radiator at some point as I have one from the 81 pickup motor I never sold. The flange seals on the transmission appear to be weeping gear oil after 250k miles so that will be next on the to-do list. I bought a set of pre-assembled TRW brake shoes with all the springs and hardware attached and will be installing those at some point on the vehicle. It's still a fun little car to drive after all these years :)
-
Well good to know that it won't shake your teeth loose if you take it out anymore. And best of all it will stop safely when asked to.
I am surprised that a lot of times when a car will sit for a while with no use how fast things tend to seize up Or go into a nonworking condition. When I bought my Pickup the daughter of the man that owned it said she was told not to sell it to someone that didn't have a heart or head for things VW. The guy really wanted it to run and had all the parts to do it. He just didn't have the health to pull it off.
After spending about an hour goin over the truck with her and her husband I asked if she would take less than asking price for it? They both turned around and had one of those quiet, head to head talks. She came back and said she was pretty positive her dad would approve if the price was not too low.
I told her I was initially looking at all the parts I would need to get it all back together and that her price was about 500 too high. But, when I finally opened up the canopy and started looking at what was there I figured at most I would need about 100 bucks to make it run with vigor. All she said was a huge, REALLY! I said sure and promptly took out all the cash I had, peeled off a 100-dollar bill, and gave her the rest. I think I should have thrown that in just to see her face split from the smile. I think she was walking on air as she went into the house for a bill of sale and the title. She had tried to sell the truck a year earlier and only had one guy come out and look at it and he never came back or called her. Her husband said I sure had a way with women.
I told him it would take me a few months but I would get it going and send her pictures. Which reminds me I might still have to do that if I get it painted this summer as planned.
-
do you have any pictures or more info about the 944 part
-
I double checked and I was mistaken. I guess it was an early 80's rabbit heater core head outlet that got mixed into my porsche parts cabinet
-
Welp the old Golf has been sitting with a busted brake line for about 6 months. Summer will be here soon so I'll finally have a chance to work on it
-
Fixed the brake line and found the passenger side floor rotted through. Have most of the pan welded in but Ill have to finish it when I have more time. These cars are rolling restorations...
-
At least we try to keep them rolling. I pulled the dash out of mine and didn't get all the wiring sorted out before the sun went down on Sunday. This weekend is a big rain coming in so I won't be out laying half in and half out of it for sure.
