Title: Ticking noise 1.6TD
Post by: Brianshayne on July 22, 2013, 08:07:03 am
Just started... Ticking sound, matches RPM...

Possibilities: I have an inner CV seal that I know is blown -- need to change it. Could it be this?
One of the belts making a sound?
Lifter/internal engine? (Doesn't SOUND like the lifter tick on my old subaru -- not a bearing tick either, as far as I know)

Should I record the sound maybe?

You can eliminate option #1 (CV) if it still ticks in neutral.

Yup did that, was about to post. It almost sounds like a gasser injector click? A little more robust though

I don't want to scare you but that is kind of what my precup did when it was about to fall out. If you notice loss of power up hills then I would bite the bullet and pull the head. If it runs fine then I wouldn't worry. It could just be the advance giving you a nailing sound.

you have a hydro or mech head? ticking -usually- indicates lifter or exhaust. if you have a mech head and know your way around your engine you may want to check valve lash. even on a hydro looking under valve cover can tell you a couple of things.

i couldn't watch/hear video as I didn't want to register on another website,
but a ticking could be exhaust or lifter. if its hydro lifters it could be bad lifter or possibly need fresh oil. if its hydro lifters and lifters/cam lobes look good; if you haven't changed oil in a while, use a good engine oil flush and run at a fast idle(don't drive with flush in oil) and change oil/filter. if you use conventional oil, i use Castrol 10w-30 cj/ch rated. if you use synthetic you'll have to find some good quarts. maybe try a auto/diesel shop, or a german shop. i don't like the rotella, the Castrol is a step or 2 up from rotella.
hopefully this will help.
i think the first thing is to determine if the 'tick' is exhaust or possibly a lifter. and if its a lifter a visual inside valve cover is what i'd start with.
if you change oil use a good filter too. napa has decent filters(air and oil; and good belts too).

Sorry, I had it set to private. My mistake. Try now.

I'm running 10w-40 Rotella atm. Should I be running a lower weight? The clicking sounds exterior in the video, so maybe belts?

is your intake set-up tight and secure?

Yes. It's not the source of the noise. Car came with that -- planning on replacing it with a stock airbox soon.

Noise was GONE this past drive again. SEems to come and go.

Most run 15w40 if conventional.

I have a 1.6TD running 0w40 full synthetic. An AAZ running 5w40 synthetic, and a TDI running 15w40 conventional.
