So i had an ACN in my Jetta but it was making noises and i was advised it may be a ticking time bomb. I pulled it and stripped it down to see what was going on. I couldn't really find anything catastrophic but there were a few things that weren't in order.. When i taking it apart it broke a bolt off in the case ::) and then proceeded to use an easy-out which also broke :'( so vie given up on this one for now. I got a good deal on an AUG today but after purchasing it I realized it has different Gearing than the ACN. The following is a list of all the 020's i have in my possession for cannibalizing and i also have a .71 5th gear set i plan on using. In order to get the best gearing Im wanting to use any combo of these 3 transmissions 4th gear sets to get the best spread and rpm drops between all the gears. Wanted some input from people on the gearing they think would work best... The AUG will be the base...
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th r&p
ACN 3.46 1.94 1.37 1.03 0.75 3.67
AUG 3.46 1.94 1.44 1.13 0.89 3.67
AGS 3.46 1.94 1.29 0.91 0.75 3.94

I'd throw the .71 in the AGS and rock that. Tall gearing with a good even spread between all 5 and the extra torquey 3.94 F/D.
That'd be 10x better behind some torque than the ACN in stock gearing..
-
I like my FF which is the same as the AGS except a slightly taller diff (3.89) and 0.71 5th. My rabbit is an un-intercooled 1.6TD. I could see how having intercooler and increasing boost might make the 3.67 diff desirable, tho.
-
Yes, with the extra torque taller gears become more manipulable ;) My ACN feels close ratio because of the super teensy K03.
-
HMMM I wish i would've looked at the code before buying the AUG i assumed that all 8v's had ACN. I suppose the AGS it is. I wonder though can i put the later style outer case (between bellhousing and 5th gear) onto the AGS so i can run the 2 pin reverse light switch?
-
If you take the 3rd from the AGS and the 4th from the ACN and the .71 for your fifth the only other gear I would rather have is the 2.12 second gear you don't have as I think it only came in the 2h and one other trans.
I have an AGS with a 3.67 r&p. It does very well in my car. If I would change it to something easier than what I mentioned up there I would just change 4th. Having 2 overdrives are not beneficial to me. I want 4th to be more around 1:1
BTW you will love the 3rd in the AGS. It is awesome.

Since the ags isn't at my immediate disposal(at crs' place) I'm going to pop the .71 into the AUG and see how it performs. It only take me and hour to get one of these guys out anymore.
edit: so after messing around with the gear up! gear calculator and hurting my head the only way to figure out what works best is to play around with differenr gearing and see what works. Gonna toss the

damb libby... the 80ff too is my fav 020 ive tried a bunch of them.. and imo that is best box.. i was swapping trannies weekly in my 84 coupe 1 mo trying to find one i liked as i screwed up my ff.. the 200ft-lb lock for 5th unscrewed its self in rev after my bigger hp motor,... :P thats a neet effect.. it will break your kneecap when that happens... unscrews shoving the release bearing into the clutch arm finger and throws it off the floor before kills the engine as it locks things up solid.. pop in netural screws back in... :P trust me a major wtf was that.. it hurt good too..

How does this *** always happen to you?

He's just been around too long.. haha
I think I liked my FF but it was on a 1.6NA so, it was long legged.
-
my 80 diesel i totaled has a ff i broke into 3 pieces... put those guts in new case.. put in my 81 that i got with 91k on it.. at the 190k point i wiped out 5th gear.. spun the gear on the pinion shaft.. teeth worked off.. so "junk" per say... put in a 81 style 5 speed.. not a ff.. fn maybe?? i could do abt 5mph more.. but 1.6na.. loved it in it too.. my fav 020 tranny..
why me bbob.. i built a engine everyone said will not work... it had so much torque.. it broke it free from think of it as working the 5th gear on the main shaft.. i had run it for months prior with no issues till i put that engine in {breaking in that engine i broke the exhaust in 3 places.. made the doors flutter like butterfly from speed.. next day go to back up.. wow wtf was that.. i miss that engine... 2.0 sucks vs it.. it would pull 90 in 3rd in 1/4 mile.. :D for a 1.8 8v.. it was faster then 16v in 94 when i built it.. 96 went 2.0.. sold the "that will not work engine" put it in a 88 digafaunt golf.. it ran another 8 years..
and yes time... been driving and working on cars since 89.. was working on then well before that.. so ive gotten to see new westy bunnies totaled on plant trains converted into race cars... i know.. 88 there were 2 g60 proto jettas in this country.. i watched vw give this team a new golf white shell.. to put it in.. to run it on pikes peak.. they blew it up.. but leading into that.. they had a beat up one converted for 24 hr nelson ledges where its lap times were faster then the vetts it compeated with...
so yes.. seen lots.. new cars are junk..
-
I got a really good deal on that FF. It only had 35,000 miles on it. I only paid $100 for it. The best part of the deal, tho, was that I got the rest of the complete rust free, straight, 4-door bunny with it for free. ;D

I run an AUG with 0.75 fifth in a gas 100 horse Golf. To me, it is only successful due to the flexibility of the gas engine. The last cog into 5th is a tall one. The gas car does not have a problem with it.
BUT, I honestly think an AUG in a diesel would be torture. Esp. with such a long fifth cog. You would be shifting all the time (like some sort of drag racer) and then make a long transition into 5th. "Roids" is the only guy I ever saw who thought this was a good idea.
My advice: wait for the AGS availability.
-
libby.. the reverse gears are worth 0-400$ to guy with mk3.. stealership wants blood... me strippin old 4 speeds when i need.. sell gear set 200$ to mk3 person pretty easy... so that ff got imo $200 value and padded envolope postage...
so bbob.. buy it.. let me guess.. you broke 1 of 4 pinion shaft bolts? ive seen that happen.. guy who was in that like you expected over tightened it... after cross threading it.. the bolt head holds all the torque.. pop it off.. you can twist out with ease normally.. would not come out due to cross threading.. so popped the head from trying to remove..
the text you sent me abt diff wine when sitting in case and spinning.. = bad bearing... never got reply..
-
broken bolt was one of the outer case bolts.
-
thats all?? take to machine shop.. let them remove.. i see no reason it cannot be "+1" sized/oversized.. use a allen hheaded bolt.. a us threaded bolt.. or even a heli coil.. 1 bolt will not make it leak.. but how id resolve it...

The AUG is closer than my ACN.. and I don't really like that my ACN has a 1.03 4th gear.. I want 4th and 5th to be overdrive gears. 4th is too high rev for my in town and 5 is too low at .75.. GAH.
-
where I am in town is 25mph to 35mph tops...No need for 4th gear at those speeds no matter what 3rd takes care of that. I need a direct drive. The AGS biggest downfall is the 2 overdrive gears.
-
That is what I am saying, I am in 5th by 35-38mph.
-
that is crazy. Put on a turbo with some lag or something.
Even so you must live in a pretty flat area to do that. You shouldn't be shifting at idle.

sad... lugging any engine uses more fuel then say 3rd vs 5th.. at that speed... your wasting fuel..
go find your ideal engine rpm/hp/torque spot.. use that.. 72ish mph in 5th via gps is my sweet spot.. less then that it burns more fuel.. more then that it does too.. that is also the speed or power spot that will hold the steapest of most hills when im not towing.. it runs cooler and pulls better in 4th vs 5th when towing up hills.. else feels like im lugging it..
p.s. stock oil cooler = fail on 75*f day towing car.. must add real one now.. it thermal soakes cooling system and the head.. took a few 30 min breaks on way home from madness when coolent running 100*c to the 110*c on oil... with 80*c stat and fan running pulling pa's hills.. if i let it cool back off like so.. id get 40-50 min till it soaked again.. so be weary of oil and water temps..

No lag = happiness. Why is everyone swapping VNT? No lag, big power lol.
Not flat by any means, probably as hilly as it can be for not being a mountainous area. My entire town is on a hillside, with hills that are EXTREMELY tricky to drive standard on. Like think San Francisco. On my drive to work I pass through 3 large ravines with grades that tax any vehicle and last for 5-6kms. I am in 5th gear for the whole 35 minute drive to work, never have to shift.
45mph in 5th is my engines sweet spot. 1900 RPM. I can pull fair size hills in town in 5th at 1500 = 40mph. One of those hills is a 18% (about 26* slope) anything above 1500.
Lugging? Noway, not in this car. Under 1500 is lugging haha. I can even tow my 2000lbs of loaded ATV trailer in 5th gear through town. (Not up the hills, those require a 4th gear down shift.) Also, I do not pay for my fuel. I haven't bought a drop of fuel since November, 17th, 2011. ;) I need to intentionally waste fuel because I cannot burn the 40L a week I am allotted through work. So.. I ROLLZ COALZ!

Lucas, your trans gearing and the much larger turbo make it easy for your car to do 2500RPM, mine is screaming and making mad boost at any throttle above 2000. lol.
