How much vacuum should the pump pull at both idle and on the road? How much is needed for strong braking power? Will the pump off of a TDI work, and if so which one(s)? What is the part number for the factory TD vacuum pump (the good rotary one)?
I ask because I need a new pump and was wondering if a electric pump off a PowerStroke truck will work. I can get the block off plate easy enough. I would just put the electric pump on a relayed toggle switch. Thank you in advance.

If you build a block off plate, it still needs to have a gear driven rotating piece to drive the oil pump. The vacuum pump is spun by the intermediate shaft which has a slot for the oil pump.

I wouldn't build one. I would get one from a gasser. At some point the gas engines moved the distributor from where our vacuum pump is to the side. And they made a factory block of plate.

The gears go the wrong way. The shaft spins the other way on a gasser... because the injection pump necessitates an extra loop of the belt, at least the ones I'm familiar with. I don't know about some of the newer engines that don't have distributors, if they would work or not. Perhaps you could put the old pump gear on it?

I could possibly use the old pump gear. Or maybe make one from the old pump even after what I said hahaha. I am getting info on the PowerStroke electric pump right now. But I need the questions I posted here answered before I can take action.

The PowerStroke pump won't work. It does not have enough volume. So any info on the other questions will really help.

I assume you have a 1.6. If so, then only a 1.6 pump will work. The 1.9 pumps are different.

That is good to know. I am also currently exploring a few other vacuum pumps that might work. However I may just have to go with a factory deal. Probably just rebuild the one I have and hope for the best.

Got a part number: 068145101EX for the early one and 068145101GX for the better later one. Jim Ellis has it supposedly for $192.00. My 2 local dealers could not get it. I guess they are still made in China maybe some other places.
So the only question left is, will one from a TDI work? If so which one?

I already answered that question. No. None of the TDI vacuum pumps will work with a 1.6.

The Parts Place still sells the vane-type vacuum pump, at least they did when I last checked. I could be wrong but I believe the only difference between them and the AAZ or later pumps is the dimension of the pump hub where it mates to the block is too big. I suppose it could be turned down on a lathe. The vane-type ones are very reliable in my experience.
Another (albeit very rare) option, if you don't want to use the factory pump is one from a 505 peugeot diesel, they are mounted on the front of the engine just like the alternator and are belt drive.

The 1.9 gear is also different.

Pretty sure I have a good used vane style vacuum pump for a 1.6 that I'd sell. IM me if you want.
And to confirm what Libby is saying, the 1.6 and 1.9 stuff is not compatible at all.

Found another thread with some info. The diaphragm pump is on MK1 engines. At 85' (my car) the moved to the vane. So there is no rebuild kit. You just have to get a new one, but the vane ones lasted a lot longer.

The only time I've seen any issue with the rotary pump was if there was poor oil supply or when the booster was leaking and it had ingested crap.

I had a problem with the booster a bit back. So I seen that Passats and a few other cars use electric pumps for the brakes. So if I can modify the old pump to still let the gear spin would one of the factory ones deliver enough vacuum to work correctly?
Also is there a way to rebuild the vane pump?
