Title: 1.5 pump timing backwards ? Never seen this before....
Post by: jlpst94 on July 11, 2013, 02:03:34 pm
I've timed several 1.6 engines but this is my first 1.5.  It's a yellow dot 79 German Rabbit.   When I roll the pump towards the motor the dial indicator decreases?  It's always been the opposite on the 1.6's.   towards the motor advanced the timing or increased  the dial  indicator.
I'm having trouble getting the car running right because my gut tells me to roll it towards the motor to get +1.15mm lift and it does the opposite.
Has anyone ever seen this or have any ideas?   Thanks in advance
Also my dial indicator doesn't move when I pull the cold start lever.  I assumed it would advance the timing when it was pulled.  I'm frustrated on this one.  I've swapped pumps etc.. Many times and have never had much trouble getting them running

that would mean ur just on the down other side of the cam lobe inside the pump, so the pump probably isn't lined up to top dead center properly.

That would be pretty far out.... like 30o cam.

What's the numbers on the pump?

The pump ends in 170 A
Everything hits dead on with TDC.   Lobes up on cylinder #1, Cam lock, pump pin, pump gear mark, and flywheel.   I checked it numerous times as I thought it was off as well.  The pump seems to work fine.  Fuel coming out at the injectors, return line, etc...

Interesting! Even if the cam were 180* out internally, you would still be able to track the opposite lobe in the pump and set your base timing normally.

I am unaware of there being an internal pieces that are different between the normal pumps and the 1.15 pumps. But hey, you never know eh?

I'd say either the pump has the wrong camplate or the woodruff key is missing from the pump shaft/sprocket and the sprocket is not aligned correctly on the pump shaft.

x2
Missing / stripped woodruff key seems like the only way it could be off so far as to make the dial indicator go backwards when rotating towards the head. You say it's not running right? I'd advise to check to make sure you've got everything locked in like it should be with the pump. It could be that you're not getting any dial indicator change when you pull the cold start lever because the cam plate is that car out of spec (and positioned on a flat spot), due to the woodruff key not being present and the pump timing is set at some funky position.  The pump would still push fuel out at the injectors/return lines even if timed out that far.

My crappy dial indicator goes in the adapter the wrong way, hence the numbers count the opposite direction, but I don't think that's  the problem you are describing.

Im not sure what you mean by the dial caliper going in the wrong way.  I have the standard dial that I see most people using

Woodruff key is installed and in place.  I can see it between the sprocket and pump plate.   I thought of this as well.  I thought there was a chance that the sprocket was off of a different model but I assumed that they were all the same.
I guess I'll just put a different pump on it.  I'm clueless
Thanks guys

If the IP is not original, it could be a anti-clockwise version.

I got it guys.  At some point someone put the gear on without looking at the key way and smashed their own keyway into it.  When I put it on I didn't realize their we're two key ways.  The correct one and a smashed in version.
Unreal,  I guess this is why it wouldn't run and the guy sold it.   Should be running later today.
Thanks everyone

i once got a rabbit with 85k on it for very cheap because the shop working on it didn't know how to time it so they thought it needed major work since it would smoke white and not start.
