Title: Off topic... SVO conversion forums
Post by: addautomotive on March 09, 2006, 01:12:16 pm
Please forgive this off topic post.

I know a few of you run used vegetable oil, or are at least "tied in" to the community.

What's the best forum out there? I've always used:
http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/groupee/forums/a/cfrm/f/898605551

I like it because there are some folks there with tons of knowledge, and who do lots of research. But lately it's turned into an ongoing pissing match. I can barely stand it anymore, and am shopping around for a new vegoil "homebase". Any ideas?

Dunno.  I rely on my local network of people in town here, as I haven't found a good forum on the internet for it.  I do know what you mean by the pissing match on some of the other forums though.

www.greasecar.com
also a pissing match
and frybrid has one too. since veggie conversions are so simple i think people learn everything they need in a short period of time and get bored then they resort to bickering on the forums.
you can post questions on here or IM me and i may be able to help.

No particular questions, I just like to keep up on recent developments & new ideas, and to share mine. Things have just been getting sour lately at the infopop forum. Wondered if there were better ones out there.

Has anyone tried insulating the vegoil tank?  I was thinking of a way to store heat energy from the motor, to reduce the amount of cold-start damage to the engine.  It may be in my best interest to use a vegoil tank with veg oil as the heat storage using the hot oil as the medium.  (would actually have the ability to stay hot overnight if done correctly...)

this is obviously better suited to the more cooler months of the year, as our cars tend to take a little while to heat up.

That is an interesting idea.  Toyota has developed a "heat battery" for its hybrid cars to retain heat in the coolant to aid in cold starting and emissions decrease.  I have often thought of this for a compression ignition steam engine,  but have been unable to get much information on it.  If you use the engine oil to heat the veg oil you get a two fold effect, an oil cooler as well as a heat battery. It would take some serious insulation to keep any significant heat overnight in the dead of winter though.

most people do insulate their tanks. i have never had the need to insulate one to the point where it would stay warm all night. may be worth a try. you def need to insulate you HIH lines because your heat will travel out of those throughout the night.
