Title: Is this a good M-TDI doner?
Post by: camboscams on June 04, 2013, 06:19:55 pm
So i can get my hands on a 98 tdi manual beetle for around 1200 bucks. I have not laid eyes on the odometer (dead battery) but the owner thinks it under 100000 so thats a plus.

So due to my unfamiliarity with tdi's which is soon to change, is this the setup that works well with a MK1 swap?

jetta will be more simple then bug for a mk1... the waterpump set up is like a mk4 requiring custom timming belt end mount that is well overpriced at nothing leaves stock... but sadly only way to do it

So better off with a jetta setup? even considering it is a low milage unit?

So having said that what would be a reasonable price for a virginia located tdi?

I think 1000-1500 is a good price

The older tdis are easier to swap to a mk1.  The 1z and ahu came in passats and mk3 jettas and u can bolt a ml1 mount to them if u use a manual tensioner and trim out the tbelt cover.

Mk4/beetle will work too and is a good engine but like chris said the passenger side motor mount needs to be bought or made.  But also a land rover pump is nearly a bolt on.

Theyll both work and honestly i wouldnt shy away from a beetle swap if u no the engines in good order

vnt too... so not as simple.. but yes can be done.. th issue is no way to mod a mk1 mount to fit.. look at what nls sells for that mount.. to copy.. not simple.. i could do it... just gotta take it into acct..

I have heard that some early beetles had wastegate turbo.

This particular car has the vnt... Well I think when the time comes i'll go the Libby injection pump route, which i don't think will benefit the almost bolt on of the rover pump will it?

Andrew's pump will far out do the Rover pump in every way.

It is brand new, zero miles, and tuned to run this engine perfectly.

The rover will NEED a reseal, and NEED tuning.. it will likely also NEED modification of some sort.

look at it like this....

libby = more.. but new/service if issue...

rover = cheap... roll the dice.. if needs rebuilt/fixed libby was better deal..

i was rover guini pig.. mine i traded e stuff for.. so no cost to give it a try... if i got burned.. easy.. send off and get fixed.. same cost...
