http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5984690-WTT-FS-92-Passat-Syncro-Wagon
Local guy has this 90 wagon 2.0 8v swapped syncro wagon.
I know of 96 TDI passat car locally -
easily make 1 of the two to have TDI Syncro ? Or much more complicated?
The Syncro came from up north and has some rust.. id want to inspect closer..
-
yep can be done... b4 is easy peasy swap into b3.. the tranny people i beleive they swap pieces to keep the gear ratios.. but gotta look into that closer..
-
You'll have to figure something out for the fuel tank because finding a diesel wagon sending unit is quite tricky. You can probably just use the gasser pickup but I'm not 100% sure.

I believe the syncros have a smaller tank than the non syncro and they use the shorter sending unit so a mk2 diesel unit would work.

i think instead i found a 91 16v front wheel drive passat wagon...
probably much easier for a tdi swap.. i hope.
is the b4 passat tdi drive by cable? so i dont need to do a gas pedal swap?
-
all tdi-e is comp.. only m is cable..
heater box needs swapped if you got complete b4 doner.. else you gotta get creative at ac comp lines...
ive done my b3 1.6td... bbob who posted here also we did his tdi-m swap here...
if you do a aftermarket fmic.. bbob should give you pics of his... i spent some time fabbing his up..
-
i think i can get ahold of 1996 passat TDi whole car.. so i would need to do a pedal swap?
the passat gets 20mpg mixed according to websites..
if i spend $1500 on donor car - then lets says $1000 on other parts , mounts , etc... $2500
that kinda alot of mpgs to make up to save money.... but it would be long term investment which i am not known to do.. :)
im buying this wagon regardless - did i read that the wagon has 22 gallon tank? geez - so you just use the stock gas tank and clean it out for the diesel swap...?
i want to do most of the work myself - the donor car has 200k+ but just had timing belt / water pump done... i should do the whole motor / tranny swap ? probably dont wanna use the 16v tranny..
I will make another , new thread - i am checking out the passat wagon thursday i hope and hope to buy it then..
-
i have a half assed b3 tdi swap thread on here. i went mechanical tdi though... i can get you pics.

by going mechanical - that is just a mechanical injection pump? can I just buy one of those from Giles or what ever?
thanks - this wagon looks really nice from the outside - I haven't looked at much up close older vw guy been driving it for a long time..
doesn't want to drive a stick anymore

libbydiesel sells them and i highly recommend it brand new zero miles built to perform. Makes the swap so easy. Just have to get a diesel throttle cable from a mk2. You just have to come up with a cluster from a canadian b3 with and aaz which i might know a guy with one and a 90 amp alt.
-
if he has whole doner he golden... ic and all direct fit.. ps, hvac, rads, hoses... why make it a m?? now if pump bad, electronics ***ed.. mk3 into mk2.. yea... but b4 into b3.. no..
the float unit in tank is biggest issue...
-------------------rumor is, tdi wagon will fit---------------------------
not tested by me... but that needs modded or tdi one tried..
you still in boulder area? i know you flip cars like mad... i know a kid in denver who would want it when you get bored... also keeping it a "e" keeps the resale good too..
-
how fast you want this done?
i am thinking i may end up in cali inn aug... my ability to stop spend a few days for swap for right price is possible...
cali guy wants 337 kubvan there.. his 397 there needs to tow zuki back here... but 397 been off road for 7 or so years and needs bumper to bumper to tow zuki back.. :P
i can do you on way... we just need to discuss when and $ if interested..
-
Why go E? What do you see as benefits? I really enjoy wiring and electronics and I own both but would much rather have an mTDI than an eTDI. With the M you eliminate 90%+ of the operational issues with these engines and without any real downside other than the loss of the fun data-logging features if you have VAG-COM. The only enticement I'd feel in going with the electronics would be for a VNT which didn't come on the 1Z or AHU. I (probably) wouldn't pull out the electronics on a stock car, but I sure wouldn't add them in a conversion.
-
I am going to go check out the Passat wagon today.. to be sure its something I want to pay $3000 for it , I do believe from what I have seen of it , it is that nice..
Then I would have to see if they guy still has the running , driving ugly Passat tdi rolling around that he painted PURPLE - I heard from a mutual friend that he would take $1500 for it...
Then once those two things happen - its on like donkey kong...
-
e for him... he sells off his toys after a few mo... he gets bored..
i look at co and such emissions out that way...
b3 in usa had no diesels...
if he resells it when bored.. its a emission issue...
also if he has complee good running e.. why make m?
i only have a m.. i own no e.. :P i too agree w power reliabilty and all.. i worry bout resale for him... a b3 wagon tdie can move into 50 states no issue.. cali included... due to the 96 swap...

Yep - i hope if i MAKE a car - then maybe i can keep it around. I havent kept anything longer than a year ( except leased cars for wife ) since 1994 when i had an mk1 Jetta Coupe for 2 1/2 years...
Well the 96 TDI guy said he wont take less than $2300 - so that idea might be out the window - his friend told me he would take $1500 - but i texted him and he said no , at least today he did...
The 92 Passat Wagon - is nice - texas car - factory vw roof rack / basket thing - i am not a fan of the light colored interior ( did they make a black ? ) the motor been sorted with rebuilt head / head gasket / timing belt kit - 4 years ago - its pretty clean - couple dings - but rockers and inner panels look good..

$2800 is kinda alot to pay for it - but it is nice - and not rusty - ac condensor is bad.... do these just use Mk2 suspension? to lower it ?
Now to sell off my 1990 diesel jetta and vanagon - to buy this and figure it out.... once its sorted out the Eco diesel will be for sale.
-
well before you pay that much i can up the antie... 2k complete b4 swap with new rad, ac condensor, tbelt/intake done less then 30k.. holds freon... car ass planted real hard...
1k for me.. 2k for swap.. 3rd week aug i could do it...
next..
people use mk2 but lower shock bolt smaller vs b3/b4... so ned mk2/mk3 lower bolt.. my worry.. keyholing rear axle as small bolt vs big hole.. think 10mm vs 12mm..
i can also include some nice lower black plastic and carpet too..
even throw in the b4 front seat belts.. and plastic.. painted black.. was tan.. but the belt units them selves do no tfit right in a b3 so check into that..
sounds as if last full week of aug and first full week of sept ill be doing this trip.. i can delver the swap even on my way.. if you no wanna pay me.. to do the swap..
1 issue with my swap that just started.. the seal behind the electrical plug on the pump started to seep.. :( shuld be easy change.. but gotta check on that and i plan to resolve it before i take the conversion apart.. still running car..
p.s. that color is one of my fav.. and i know your selling habbits due to mk1 section on poortex.. i hope you wanna keep it.. but i just see your habbits.. and vs a syncro where who ever buys it knows they may get flack.. i just wanna make sure you have a easy reselable swap if it no float your boat..

Watch your local salvage auctions for swap donor engines/cars.

Oh I do... Alot..
I do own 1996 passat vr6 auto. Was gonna part it. Probably.
I have convinced myself to buy the wagon. So clean..
Then I need to decide if tdi swap is worth the $3000.
Math time.
20 gallon tank. ( easier math )
Today diesel was $3.69. Primium was $4 ( might of been $4.10 )
$73.80 to fill up with diesel
$82 gas
According to google search mixed use 16v passat gets 20 mpg
That's 400 miles one tank
My lead foot diesel driving ass. Hopefully get 40 tdi. Mpg. 800 miles per tank.
Every time I fill up saving 10 gallons of gas. Use. So today price. Let's say easy math $40 I save per fill up
Divide $3000. By $40. 75. So after 75 fill ups I'd be even? $5535 worth of diesel. Maybe I'm drunk. And doing it wrong. The math.... Since I can go twice as far on a tank of tdi. Maybe it would faster to save money. 12000 miles a year. 30 tanks of gas. 15 tanks of diesel. 15 x 20 gallons saving of $1107 a year in diesel fill ups. So it would be 3 years before I would make that savings up and I would have $6000 plus into a 1992 vw passat wagon as a tdi.....
I've been driving almost 300 miles a week. Right now. Which is 15,600 miles a year... I feel like I'm filling up my jetta once a week. Maybe I need to keep better track. To see if the savings would take less time to recover...
This mk2 Eco diesel. Drives me nuts driving in town. So damn slow... With ac on... Painful to drive it in town... Ok end of rant...
-
I get almost 1k out of a tank...
-
your milage 800+ easy.. my 1.6td i have in my b3 wagon cracks 41mpg at 75-80 fully loaded... tdi more effecent... e maybe 1% more then m.. but tdi vs idi is bigger percent yet.. my mkilage vs bbob.. ive cracked 800 a few time.. ive also dumped 21 gal in mine where poortex passat section people used to fight w/me on the 20+ gal tank remark...
its bigger then sedan due to the full sized spare... why the float unit way different.. my "modded" pick up works ok.. bbob been using my design since we built his.. i still want to see a tdi wagon one in person... poortex guy swears it right.. he did a tdi swap back before i was banned.. thats been 2 years at min.. the actual tank i taller...
full sized spare for win... :D
nice b4 tdi wagons fetch 6-8k on resale... rotted ones that ugly they want 4k+ cause tdi wagons hard to find...
b3 imo better metal, they do not riot odd like a b4 does.. i know the door handles and win regulaters are supiror to the b4.. i also think the b3 electronics better.. but the electrical system on both b3 and b4 get quirky..
so imo.. the clean tdi-e swap... in a clean wagon.. you will be at bottom end value at the build point..
-
have you done the tank vent flipper mod on the eco?? abt 9 o' clock in the filler opening is a trigger to press with the fill nozzel.. helps so much to fill a diesel to remove the "finger" so it auto vent.. makes it easy to top off.. i showed bbob how on his b3 for his eco... gotta mod filler neck hole on b3.. so i also pulled his "finger" out too..
-
I have crammed over 21 gallons in my tank and i hadn't ran out of fuel yet when i pulled in to fill up. next time i go up to chris' we are going to pump tank dry and figure out exactly how much it holds. ive been getting 42-48 mpg in my m-tdi thats with too much fuel screw, heavy foot, 80mph on freeway most of the time lots of boost, smoke, and old nozzles. Hoping these new nozzles will get rid of the smokey issue. Adjusting the idle on this pump is a choir so thats why i haven't just backed out the fuel screw to where it doesn't smoke. engine has 230k on it too btw... egts peak at 1150-1200.
-
i gotta sell off a few cars - then i am going to buy the wagon - figure out AC leak charge it up - once Ac is stable drive it as daily and probably sell the eco-diesel. to fund the TDI swap for the B3
I wouldnt be apposed to the idea of a road trip - i have a 40x120 shop with a car hoist - even a nice couch if ya wanted to sleep there... :)
I would have to be sure that i have another car i can drive while the car is down for the count - i can remove the 16v stuff - hell maybe even have dash out for heater box swap etc.. just gotta be sure i have another car to drive to get me back and forth.. which usually i do...
i saw b3 passat coilovers on ebay for like $400- some brand never heard of though.. i dont want to SLAM it - i actually think my eco diesel is 1 1/2 inches too low - have to be a smart low car driver when going up inclines.... i might even be happy with a nice modest 60/40 drop.
I should be able to recoop some money with the 16v 2.0 motor - might be able to get $1000 out of that set up , tranny / ecu wiring - maybe not - but i always try. that would help also.
I need to find a tdi cluster? Woudl it be in KM then? i dont think i like idea - i would get confused - havent had speeding ticket for 6 years or so ( Damn E36 M3 )
i could still get that local car for 2300 - part it out can easily recoop some more money there - its got ugly ass 3 spoke old school chrome wheels - i bet if i waved $2k in his face he would take it - he claims he is driving it daily.... ok stop typing - gotta get ready to go photograph an outdoor wedding and its suppose to start thunderstorming right when ceremony suppose to start!
-
complete b4 swap.. cluster, ic.. so on... it usa cluster so mph.. it electric so stock gone.. thinking just hit 200k...
kubvan = bunkbed.. :D if i actually owned it id say you can borrow... but not mine.. its our camper for the whole trip...
honestly.. balls to wall is bout 28hr job.. rent car for 2 days... now if i had to custom fab ic stuff that when time gets into it... your b3 has the holes for factory ic.. well b4 ic set up.. syncro used them.. thats with removing the 16v and stuff..
i would buy new heatercore (i as in you, replace now best).. ill have box pre refoamed before i got there...
keep the 16v rear mount... or talk to theman 53.. he makes a rear mount for vnt.. a upgrade you can do down the road.. and i can grab that in person.. else i need to bring this subframe as rear mount different.. i think 16v softer/less vibration.. its hydro filled vs tdi..
t belt, w pump all that is done.. so it drops right in.. oil/antifreeze all it will need..
if i have my end prepped.. you had all wiring intact.. do not unplug any more then engine side and such.. and dash stuff pulled.. 2 days is no prob.. but really i kinda prefer to so i know how things were routed/plugged in..
ill make sure the cat has enough pipe to join to your system for now.. i suggest straight pipe out the back, gotta get it out from unde the bumper by 1/2" else you soot the opening of the hatch.. this one is so bent i cut it.. but i will cut way back where the suitcase is and i know center pipe perfect length.. it also right id for stock parts too on the 16v..
-
if you want custom ic set up.. let me know.. imo what i did on bbob's best ever.. id copy most of his before i go.. i can pull his pipes to copy... his turbo/intake different.. but those few pieces i can fab off the one before i strip it.. :D
just a idea of my "creative" side.. vs a direct swap.. http://driiive.com/njn036/86-Coupe-vr6t/ (http://driiive.com/njn036/86-Coupe-vr6t/) custom crap i get into.. as well i know who you are.. no idea if you ever paid attention to me..
-
Chris will build you a rock solid automobile!
-
Its motor ( tdi ) and TDI 02a Tranny? Or i use 16v stock one? ( isnt it o2a also ? )
I sold my neuspeed supercharger today - so getting close on buying the wagon.
It actually already has a LONG ASS straight pipe coming out the back from some reason... ;)
VNT - is a turbo upgrade? is that what you are referring to with that rear mount? Im so anal i would probably buy a NEW AC compressor also cuz i gotta have AC and dont want to mess with it later - id buy all new mounts - as well as heater core.. I also have Callaway Boost gauge - callaway pryometer ( so i would need a EGT installed into the TDI exhaust manifold ) since i dont have the B3 in front of me - not sure where to mount two gauges? Is there place in center console?
I think he mentioned the sunroof was bad or he already replaced it - cant i do a glass one from a b4 ?
Im getting excited - i hope to have funds to buy Passat by end of the week ( im holding off selling my Eco diesel )
I want to install my Recaro trophys that are in the eco diesel into the B3 - do they interchange ( the seat rails ) i think you can go G60 corrado into mk2 , but know you cant go mk3 into mk2 ) What is B3 ?
I have a friend with an extra rear Recaro trophy back seat so i can have a custom rear seat made ( might even install heated seat elements into my front recaros ,but ive read on internet bad things happening to cars that have done that ... :) )
-
b4 glass fit b3.. ill have to see if this one is damaged though.. did not see any roof buckling.. but neither rear door will open..
gauges hard.. the blown vr6 my boss has, has them where the ashtray is.. they suck.. i have really old school vdo made in its own cup in my b3.. but no pyro in it..
bbob put a 3 gauge pod in his.. its ok on the side windshield.. take us a pic bbob..
vnt is a later style turbo, instead of a waste gate the scrolls in it change to mod the exhaust turbine size.. does not fit stock mount.. but custom one will allow it.. mount as in the piece that goes from engine to subframe rubber mount..
this ac system fully charged.. need new o-rings once i crack it open.. ill proscaniate on that till days before i head out.. so its not open to the enviroment too long.. new condensor i put in in june last year.. sadly that made the rad leak so got new one of them in aug..
you will be left over with a o2a swap.. this comes with great quiet tranny.. pedals/shifter and all.. the new clutch slave/master fit this pedal set up vs the b3 one so will be swapped.. i have never done a clutch on this.. got 200k on it.. but feels great.. but if you wanna change it now is time..
recaros... mmmmm sadly not direct swap.. passat seat leg is wider like a mk3.. so set of bases to fit recaro in mk3 is just $ away.. sadly passat into mk2 not so simple.. i borrowed my pass seat from my mk1, have too else tilt back adj knob is problem.. and made a drivers recaro in my passat.. :D
-
There is b3 passat at u pull it maybe I'll go grab the front seat bases to fab up something for my recaros
I thought mk3 glass roofs worked in corrados which would then mean they fit in b3?
Maybe the guy fixed it. I just don't remember
It would be my luck if I didn't do new clutch. That I would destroy it after a few month better safe than sorry..
I am kinda thinking about offering up $2k for that local tdi b4. Daily it. Sell Eco diesel. Once b3 done have a swap car for something else. It's purple though. With ugly wheels....
Anyone got 17" wheels. 4x100? I have a decent set of 205/40/17's. But no rims....
-
l the glass not broken.. :P but there are a few other things that screws the ill just swap the metal for glass...
the rear drip tray different, held in different too.. will get wet as the drip tray does not work in the swap glass for metal idea.. needs whole thing.. i just wanna make sure it still works.. it got hit hard..
beater tdi!!! have both... the one this conversion came from was ugly.. but everything worked... was gotten for the swap.. but hell everything worked... so decided to run it as a dd.. when the "extended caddy needed its power" then it would die a deserving death... then the owner got a liver transplant.. has not driven since.. lost all his lifes collection of toys... and his wife got nailed hard in nov with it.. so its nice to know it can live on in rust free for more..
skip the b3.. bases off mk3 weigh half as much.. the lower b3 adjust stuff for lumber and all... mk3 lacks that stuff..
-
I have mk3 jetta trek at shop awaitng tear down... Forgot those seats are recarro'ish
I can trade my Eco deisel for that 92 syncro wagon mentioned at first... He just panted the aba intake pink with sparkles. :(
Browsing craiglist. Guy in Denver parting b4 tdi wagon. Listed tank for sale... Should I or just convert my gasser tank?
-
if you want.. the pickup for sure.. but modding where fuel nozzle goes in is easy... so if chep heck yea... but if dipped in gold.. na..
-
Sold vanagon. Hope to get the passat by Friday. Yippie. Yeah.
