Title: How much H.P. 1.6 turbo diesel
Post by: Dean Erickson on May 25, 2013, 06:41:42 pm
It's been a while since I have been on here but I am still very much into vw diesels. I thought you folks on here could give me an idea how much H.P. I am making. I am running a stock N/A pump with the pump turned up a bit it blows lots of black smoke at full throttle. It has a kkk 14 turbo with a boost controller set at 20 psi. 2.5 exhaust out the back of the truck. ECO intake so no blow off valve. Timing is set so when I pull out the advance cable it knocks real good. So it's around 1 mm. In second gear it has nice power that will set you back in the seat when it comes up on the turbo. I am thinking about 100 h.p. what do you guys think?

Is it intercooled?  If it was I would agree with 100 hp.

No intercooler but I have been thinking about getting a IC from a saab the blackstone IC.

It will make a big difference and clean up some of the smoke as well.  I would try dropping your boost pressure a bit until you get an intercooler.  Anything over 12-15 psi without an intercooler can actually work against you.  The compressed air just gets too hot to make a difference.

20 psi on a k14 is about as high as I would go on an eco k14 intercooled or not though 20 psi not intercooled is really pushing it I think. 12psi and added fuel(td pump tuned and fuel screw turned up)  on mine it got hot( no intercooler).

What would it take to get to 150 H.P.? I think the gov mod it out because the kkk 14 signs off to soon. Would I see a big jump just getting a turbo pump?

Personally I feel that getting the 1.6 IDI's above 150hp, is a challenge for the average Joe. To the point of money really, money will need spent if any surmountable power from a 1.6L IDI is desired.

You will see absolutely no power gain from switching to a TD pump, simply because they have the same capabilities of pumping fuel. The only thing you will gain is the ability to tune it for little to no smoke before boost picks up.

I don't know any of the technical stuff on these engines but after getting a fresh 1.6td motor in my 79 rabbit I have found myself pondering mods as well.  I am in bay area,ca and I am kind of surprised actually that as is I can function on the freeways without getting ran over :)

But with loads in the car and hills I am finding it annoying to rev the hell out of 4th gear and pinning it to keep up with 55-70 mph on the freeway.

Do the people with money upgrade to another generation motor?

What if they want to retain mileage of the 1.6 and already have a good engine to start.    Is money better spent modding the heck out of it, or will that ruin the reliability of the car 100,000+ miles down the road?

they buy a rear ended tdi car and put all of that in there.  Or a 1.9td idi.  Both will get you there quicker and more reliably imo

1.6 doesn't*** get better mileage than a 1.9 TDi..

bbob how do you come to that? 1.6td b3 = less then your tdi-m.. and b4 tdi-e i think people get more.. but a e not as strong..

i say tdi e or m and my tdi-m runs stronger then stock 2.0 16v...

any tdi till the pd in 04 is easy to do persay.. in m really easy..

What would be the best 1.9 td to put in my truck. Best power, reliability and less electrical bull crap. Won't a 1.6 td pump fit on a 1.9? that would get rid of the electrical stuff. What year engine also.
Thanks.

easiest best..

96-99.5 tdi from passat/jetta as its same style block set up as stock.. with a libby/rover pump so its a mechanical tdi..

you cannot put a idi pump on a tdi and work properly..

but you gotta fab intercooler, exhaust.. so unless you can fab things or can pay for fabbed parts.. it gets costly vs a standard turbo 1.6.. but as is your exceeding that.. so custom time..

does i thave ac? are you keeping the ac... what alt set up you plan to use? trust me those things important for under hood room.. why i asked above what do you have/run.. so i know room restraints

No AC  on the truck. The alt sets down low in front of the water pump so stock alt set up.  I am good at fab work I made my exhaust from front to back on my truck. I have a wire welder so I can do fab work. Libby/ rover pump? is that a pump that andrew makes for this set up?  What is the H.P. on a 1.9 td set up like this? I think I am looking at doing this when I put my truck up this next winter, so if I can get all my ducks in a row I will be all set.

people i talked to say injectors, right turbo 200 before pump mods with a rover pump...

libby is a member here who sells/builds pumps.. his i think are cummins based vs rover based.. they all bosch just different brands use..

mine (rover w/gov mod)with real ic, exhaust, stock silly little turbo, finally cooked it, was more then enough to tow car from cali to ohio.. as i said.. i think its more stout then a 2.0 16v.. and running too much boost stock vr6 no issue.. mine pulls 6k rev like gasser too.. and its pulling.. not dead..

why did mine eat turbo.... somewhere i popped a coupler.. still made 15psi at manifold.. how much over spool? also hit a egt of 1450 for 5min thru mountain passes on west side of denver... those 2 things related, who knows.. had 305k miles on it and ive run it 18-21psi since my build.. those little kkk not supposed too... mine liked it..

yours is bigger so a power upgrade..  you just gotta find a tdi long block.. i suggest a 02a conversion.. a libby/rover pump and bolts in like yours is..

if you go with a serp alt set up.. the ic room becomes less..

what i would do in a non ac mk1 is side by side intercooler/rad.. make them thick and skinny.. just your alt set up will determine width of it all...
