Title: Mk2 1.6td, into Mk1 - wiring question.

Hey,

I've installed a 1.6td ( from a mk2) into my  mk1 jetta (had a n/a engine) - although the car is labeled as turbocharged.

The mk2 temp sensor has 2 wires, the the mk1 chassis wiring suggests 1 wire to temp sensor sensor?


Where does the 2nd wire on the mk2 sensor connect to on the  mk1 wiring? To ground?  

Actually I'd like to see a few mk1 engine compartment pics - specifically the wiring - as it has played with.

I think the Mk2+ sensors have two wires since they are all mounted in a plastic housing, so the need the second wire for ground. The old Mk1 senders would be in a metal housing so they'd ground through that.

I think the difference is actually CE1 vs CE2 electronics... My 1992 (originally a gas car) has the wiring for 2 wire sensors all around, the sensors are the o-ring type and are retained by circlips. The '85 car had the single wire sensors, aluminum water outlets instead of plastic and the sensors themselves were threaded. I would suggest you source a mk1 or early mk2 water neck with the early style sensor.
