Title: Newbie needs exh~turbo bolt torques...
Post by: HarryMann on March 07, 2006, 05:35:40 pm
HI, newbie here

What figure do you all torque down the manifold to turbo bolts to? Those v. expensive bi-hex cap screws, 2 long, 2 short. Garret T2 on an AAZ using JX manifolds
Thanks

According to the Bentley manual: 30 ft-lbs (torqued in stages), for the polygon-head exhaust manifold to turbocharger bolts.

Also, a tip on these: copper-based anti-seize will make these bolts easy to loosen next time.  Gray moly-based anti-seize doesn't seem to be able to take the intense levels of heat these bolts encounter.

Thanks Jake, appreciate the quick response on that..

I had estimated 33 ft-lbs from the bolt size (M10 12.9 grade), so that sounds just fine...

and will defintely take advice and put copper-slip on threads (but been told not under the bolt heads). Boy, were they hard to get out, two that had been replaced with hex socket cap-heads sheared off!

A further question...

Do these flanges go back together without any gasket at all... I know they don't have one from the factory so have tried to clean up surfaces as good as I can, but a thin stainless gasket has been mentioned by a mechanic I know, sometimes supplied with replacement turbos?

That this stainless gasket they were referring to is probably the turbo to downpipe gasket. It's usually two thin stanless pieces tacked together
