Title: WTB: MK1 front wheel bearing circlips
Post by: CrazyAndy on May 03, 2013, 03:28:50 pm
Anyone got a pair of  MK1 wheel bearing circlips lying around?  I was doing my bearings when two of them just broke off at the ends from being so old and frozen.  The FLAPS doesn't sell them individually unless you get them in a kit  . . . which is 15 dollars more . . . per wheel . . . oh did I mention I already bought the bearings?  >:(

So yeah, if anyone could post me some that'd be great.  :)

Thanks!

Why is it that the bearing kits I have bought have not fit into any of the mk1 hubs I have come across?  I ended up using my old ones because of it.

They are too thick?

Andy,  Doesn't your local hardware store do large clips like that?  I think our ACE here does.  Maybe just a tad to small.  Auto shop doesn't have selection for this purpose?

They seem so basic.  Is it just the MM and large size that is forcing the issue?

Damac You mean wide?  As in they press in but don't have room for the clip to seat in the groove?  Or the diameter is too big.  I freeze the bearing and heat the vertical support a bit and pound in with the old bearing.  Grease the cold one and it doesn't seem to take much effort.

I just use a bearing press myself, but I have access to one so disregard this.

As far as asking about who has 'em, I have admittedly only checked NAPA; dunno if Advance or AutoBone would even have them, but I haven't checked Lowes yet.  Don't even know if there is an ACE around here, but there are a few specialty fastener shops hidden around; might need to hit them up.  It's just that they're kind of a relic outside of transmission shops, since wheel bearings aren't usually held in by big-ass circlips, and newer bearings are all bolt-on.

just buy 1 kit.. should have 2 clips in it.. only should have to remove 1 clip per wheel.. tool designates inner or outter.. aka press in same way it came out... instead of thru it..

when i break 1.. i goto other to remove.. leve broken one alone..

you must put them back.. else the bearing will work side to side in the spindel... then cv joint starts to rub odd ways...

Try McMaster Carr?    They may have something.   If you can't find anything local - I have a set (new) somewhere in the shop I was saving, but don't drive any Mk1's anymore.

I'll let you know what I can find; if I don't turn anything up then I'll PM you.  Thanks.

I looked and the place I ordered online calls the kits made by pex?

I have never had their clips fit into a mk1 hub, they are too thick to seat into the groove, the diameter seems fine.

Sorry to exhume this FS thread, but just wanted to say uberhare got my a perfect set of circlips. Thank you very much!

Also, for posterity, I'd also like to post circlip dimensions to help source aftermarket options:

Unsprung width: 68 mm
Thickness: 2mm

McMaster-Carr doesn't have anything right on the money, but part # 98455A146 is about the quivalent, as the bearing hub groove is about 63-64mm.

Again, thanks to uberhare; now, to get these hubs back on the car!
