ugh...car is on a side road off the highway again......a big metal on metal noise...then the dash lights started flashin.....
got her pulled over and heres what i see....for reference, the power steering pump is on the lower right.....
im pretty sure thats where the harmonic balancer used to be.....we searched the highway..and found the power steering belt...but nothin else....what else is gone...
is this even fixable?.....interstingly enough, the car still idles fine...just heats up quick and no power steering:)

Wow! It looks fixable with another balancer/pulley. You'll need an EZ out and reverse twist drill bits to get the broken bolt out, a tap to chase the treads. Hopefully the bolt holes are not wallowed out. If they are, a new timing belt sprocket and crank bolt will fix that problem too.

And one on the water pump pulley. What in the hell killed all your bolts!??

I have no clue......was a loud scraping noise and more than a few bangs as everything came apart..... Sigh

Are there any animal parts or tire treads or any other foreign materials in your engine compartment?
-
Did your ps pump lock up? If not I would say something got into the belts. If it starts and runs fine with no crank wobble then that is probably not it. Good luck.
-
I'd be looking for a cat or cat hair under there someplace.
-
Better check torque on the crank bolt.

do you have a clutched alt pulley?

do you have a clutched alt pulley?
no but was in the process of getting one for it.....
honeslty, i might just call it quits with the diesel.....in addition to the new crank pulley, somethings wrong with either the glow plugs or the relay...it burns oil..and the body is rusty....i think maybe its time has come....sad maybe but i need a dependable daily driver...and this aint it anymore...

it has gone too long with not enough maintenance then..
ive been driving a PARTS CAR for over 4 years now... problem free, logged over 100k miles on it..
yes, i bought the car as parts, but then i didnt have the heart to take it apart after i got it home, and got it running..
all it takes, is some basic maintenance, and these VWs will go for EVER..

It might not need the crank pulley fixed if its not messed up you can install the clutched pulley and you dont have to worry about that infamous aaz crank nose failure. glow plug system easy to troubleshoot. i would source a god used harmonic balancer and get 'er fixed it up

it got regular maintenance and all...timing belt was just done along with a few other things....regular oil changes...but a while back, the serp belt snapped when my wife was driving it, and i think it mighta overheated....hasnt really been the same since....

Hey sorry to threadjack but I have a crankshaft pulley with an unbelievably unremovable bolt I broke an Allen in... could I just buy a new timing belt gear and crank bolt and swap without removing the bolt?

yes i have removed the timing gear with the vbelt pulley still installed on it. you could also pull it and drill it out from the other side and helicoil it.
-
Very clever! Excellent! I had been dreading this. Is the crank bolt tty? Also also: should I lock the IP and camshaft before I yank it? Ill prob just do a new timing belt and idler while I'm there...

Just as an update for anyone that read my post....
I did not end up getting rid of the jetta.....and though it took me awhile, the jetta is now back up and running, with new glow plugs, harmonic balancer, clutched alt pullley.....and dare i say, i think it runs and drives better than it did before.....
so..one less jetta sent out to pasture:)
Thanks to all that helped or sold me parts:)
Cheers
