Hi all,
I wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts on the fuel filter assembly on sale at princess auto for 29.99.
(See page 15 of the flyer - princess auto number 2460036 or 2461226, depending on port size)

I was wondering if anyone has used this one - I was thinking of changing out the one in my 97 idi.
I would appreciate any and all comments ASAP!

That filter isn't bad,but why switch ?
The OEM filter is more than enough,why mess with a good thing ?

because the filter elements are much cheaper to replace?

Fuel filters last a pretty long time on these little diesels,as long as you have a good fuel source.The little bit you will save on filters will take a while to recoup.
Don't forget,you will have to cut and modify the OEM plastic lines,and buy fittings,clamps,etc.It may not also fit in the OEM location,so you may need to relocate it.
I still don't think it's worth it.

anyone know what the micron size is on the oem filters?
lots of tdi guys upgrade to a cummins filter for removal efficiency and the cheaper cost of filters, thought this may be in the same vein...

I'm with rico on this one. All I have is two generic lines going to and from my filter. If another brand will do the same exact thing then why not? as long as its not much bigger than the OEM, it should fit nicely with a custom bracket of some sort.
I cant find a '92 diesel filter for my car, and when I do its not the same type (has some extra fitting on the top thats made for a newer 1.9 that can let air in when cold)
changing the diesel filter is a really good idea considering how dirty our diesel is here in NA compared to Europe.
I think its 30 micron for diesel. Anything smaller and you would need to change it more often. (I guess this would be good reason to change to biodiesel)

That's pretty much the same Goldenrod filter that he was talking about about.
Remember the fittings on it are HUGE,like 3/4 NPT or something.You will need a bunch of adapters and barbed fittings to make it work.I don't think it will go in the OEM location,it's too big.
It's more for filtering diesel on big equipment,or on transfer pumps.
If you shop around,you should be able to find a normal VW fuel filter for your car for less then $15.00.That's pretty cheap,and they last a long time.I'm pretty sure the OEM filter is at least 10 microns.

I have looked around for one for my Golf but they want $45 and the have to order it.That one i posted was like $35 has 1inch NPT,and i think no more the 6inchs longer then stock.I am just trying to find a ezer to find filter and if it's cheaper then thats better yet.

www.vwdieselparts.com has them for $23.00 or so.
www.altrom.com has them for $16.00.
Those are both list prices,you may be able to get a discount if you order a couple,or get a shop to order them for you.

the one from pricess auto comes in two sizes, 3/4 npt and 1/2 npt

hey all, turns out that is a typo in the flyer
they only offer 1" and 3/4" npt
im sure that its possible to bring it down, someone might have even done so, but it was too much hassle for me.
i still think this is a great option if someone can find a smaller inlet and outlet port size, filters are only 6 bucks at pa (maybe cheaper elsewhere) too

Yeah, a few bucks at the plumbing store will allow you to attach 5/16" fuel line to the 3/4" NPT. I've got a goldenrod filter on mine now. The biggest problem is that there is not provision made for a mounting bracket -- it's supposed to hang on the 3/4" pipe....

Is there any problmes with fuel flow on this after it is flider with fuel ?Also any pics of how you monted it up?Also how offent do you chagne the fliter?Thanks for any info.

Princess Auto carries a generic filter head,with 3/8" NPT ports for $10.10 micron diesel rated filters are $8 each.Just a regular spin on setup,like the older VW's.
