I have a 1.5D with no vac pump that I got from a friend, he gave the vac pump to someone before I got the motor.
The original came with the curly q early style style pump.
I'd like to put in an early (81) 1.6 oil/vac pump matched set that I have, and swap out the oil filter housing to get rid of the curly q supply line?
Are there IM shaft differences between the 1.5/1.6 that would prevent this?

I seem to recall a thread on here a while back talking about the differences between oil pump drives (which is what the vac pump engages to) on the 1.5 vs 1.6... Something about the length being different. I don't recall if it was the actual oil pump drive or if it would affect the vac pump in any way. Would be worth finding...

I think I know the post you are thinking of ...With the three pumps laid flat on a table to look at their drive ends.
I have a matched set of both the early 1.6 diaphragm and the later vane type. (I think that is how they are referred to)
I'll clean and inspect the oil pump and put a matched set in.

I don't think the difference was between the early 1.6 and later 1.6.
I think the curly-q ones had a different oil pump because one supplies oil through the curly tube and one through the shaft of the oil pump,..
oil pump shaft length is different.

I was trying to mention two kinds of vac pumps (early 1.6 diaphragm and the later vane type)
And the 1.5 oil/vac pump being different for sure

Ok so last night I pulled apart the old 11mm 1.6D and found this on the oil pump pick up screen

Then I realized I should have looked at the spline of the oil pump before I went to the trouble to pull it

So I pulled an oil pump and vac pump from another later 1.6 I had.

Looking pretty clean so far and the slot/spline ends of each look pretty good.
I was wondering if the newer style oil pump with the baffle on it work with the 1.5 oil pan?..I haven't had time to try it yet

When the oil pump blade and vacuum pump slot starts to wear like that it shoves the gear upward,
wearing it's way into the brass thrust bearing on the bottom of the vacuum pump.
If they shove far enough apart they will stop engaging and screech as the oil ight comes on.
Vane pumps don't have a brass thrust bushing.
Both styles have a seal inside the gear
that seals around the oil pump shaft.
It's often black and brittle
and often mistaken for metal.
And to answer part of your original question.
You can't use a 1.5 I-shaft in a 1.6,..
but it has nothing to do with the vacuum pump.
The 1.6 crank hits the 1.5 gear because it doesn't have the corner cut off.

idk if you already got your answer, but you need to change the oil pump AND vacuum pump..
i would use a 1.6TD oil pump and vac pump..

I'm going to use the set on the wooden table in the above photo
On my phone just now or I would just repost it.
I will be using the matching set of pumps from a 1.6d non turbo for now

Looks like this is the seal number for the vane pump
A 2011 post on another site says: "VW part number #068 145 117 B
Quantities limited in North America.....get 'em while you can!"
I haven't tried to order one yet though

Our local VW parts dept doesn't stock the vac pump seal anymore
Does anyone have cross reference part number for it ?
