Am rebuilding the Caddy's Steering Rack.....By the way thanks all for the info on the outer Right Bushing..
What should I use to re-grease it? I want something supper tacky and with a wide temp range. Had to steam clean the rack to get rid of all the little bits of crap the got in there due to falure of both boots.

VW cv axle grease.

i use wheel; bearing grease... imo cv grease too light for that...

Cv grease has worked well for me a couple times. Remember the pass side inner bushing.

I use dry moly spray.
Hagar suggested it.

I think the Bently lists a specific moly lube too.

I have been looking for a while now.
CV, and other "General Purpose/Wheel Bearing" type grease is not "Tacky" enough.
The original grease was very "sticky". I am trying to replace that.
Worth hhs 2000 looks good, if I could find it locally. Or a high pressure chain grease might be okay.
What brand of dry Molly are we talking?

A marine grade teflon based lubricant will work, it is designed to be submerged with the stern drives lower unit.. its never coming off.

this thread got so over involved. Cv axle grease is so incredibly slick and sticky I used it on my shifter parts and works awesome and it doesn't get washed off in the rain.

I think you're sweating the small stuff. Volkswagen is not NASA. They weren't looking for a grease that would make it around the sun and back. Volkswagen sold economy cars, so their criteria was only that it be cheap yet last the length of the warranty period of the car. That's it. The steering gear isn't under a lot of load and it doesn't get very hot, so as long as you put a good grease in it, and keep water and dirt out, it will last a very long time.
Anyway, I think it's actually the "SynPower" Valvoline that I use, it's red and pretty tacky. There's also this stuff, (http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?catid=14&iid=46&loc=show) which is, red and tacky like it says, but I don't think it's worth the price and it's hard to find.

I think it's CRC dry Moly.
A green can.

Grainger carrys the CRC Dry Molly locally, and I am going to try a Marine Products Spline and Bushing Grease. It is a pretty blue and as for tacky, can you say "glue"?It is also High/Low Temp, and Extreame Pressure.
I will let you all knowl how it turns out.
