Title: Quick gear question

Well i got my car on the road finlly.My question is what are the speeds for each gear and at what speed do you shift up to the next.The car is 1986 VW Golf 1.6N/A with a 5speed.Thanks for any help guys

you should be able to work out engine speed from the table in Bently, or this thread:

As for a safe max speed to shift at, if you car is stock you should be pretty safe shifting as it looses power when the internal govener kicks in at around 4k RPM.  And you might as well shift at that point anyway!  

My 400,000km '91 TD hits the governer quite a few times each day.
