Approx. 14,900 CAD
Loremo LS
Engine - 2-cylinder turbodiesel
Output - 15 kW / 20 HP
Max. speed - 160 km/h
Acceleration - 20 sec. (0-100km/h)
Transmission - 5-gear manual transmission
Consumption - 1.5 l/100 km
Fuel range - 1.300 km (20-l-tank)
Weight - 450 kg
If you think 20 seconds is slow, the Mercedes Benz Smart that frequently roam our streets today does 0-100km/h in 19.5 seconds and they're doing perfectly fine.
However, the Loremo GT with a three cylinder turbo diesel does 0-100km/h in 9 seconds, tops out at 220km/h, and weighs at 470kg. For almost 6,000 CAD more.
The Loremo LS's 2 cylinder engine has 10HP per cylinder whereas the 3 cylinder version (GT model) has 16.67HP per cylinder. I wonder if the 2 cylinder is as robust as a 3 cyl version, leaving room for more power enhancements. Adding 10HP in the LS version might cut 0-100km/h times from 20 seconds to low 16's.
The following quote is from the 'Philosophy' page on Loremo's web site:
Why do we need 1.5 tons of steel to get an 80 kg person from A to B?
I fully agree with that.
This vehicle meets the criteria of my dream commuter car: Minimalist, functional, practical, efficient. It's plain sexy from an engineering standpoint. God, I want it.

I'd still want a fast diesel. A 'big' diesel engine swap in one of the Loremos would be ideal.
The ideal engine is the 3 cylinder 1.4L TDI that can be imported for under 2,000 CAD. It produces 90hp in stock trim. Maybe 100-110whp with chip and injectors.
Assuming 100whp in a Loremo that weighs 490kg (I added another 20kg due to the larger engine), it will have the same power-to-weight ratio of a 310whp turbocharged VR6 MKIV VW Golf that I rode in not too long ago.. giddy giddy  and it still will have at least 90mpg. The 1.4 TDI is originally rated at 60mpg in a VW Polo that is more than twice as heavy @ 2,630lb. Don't forget that the engine will retain OEM reliability in a turned-supercar Loremo!
Now imagine a ~260bhp tuned 2.0L 16v TDI. It will have an equivalent power-to-weight ratio of a 800bhp MKIV VW Golf. The economy will still be amazing due to very little load required to accelerate the vehicle during normal driving. It'll blow away virtually every vehicle on the street. Even a NA spec 1.9L TDI will be crazy enough.
No wonder vehicle weight is important for performance/efficiency. You can make monster HP in a heavy ass vehicle, like the Dodge Cummins, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper and more fun (less padding between driver & road) to drive in a lighter vehicle. The Loremo is indeed RWD
If a performance enhanced Loremo becomes impractical for daily driving, a second one could be bought for another 15,000 CAD, which is likely half of the average price of a new sedan that joe public buys.
Loremo's projected release date is three years from now - 2009. I have a friend/relative in Vancouver that runs a business importing exotic & regular cars from all around the world - rare Porsches, BMWs, Mercs, etc. He could help ship a car over here. Whether the Loremo can be insured in BC is questionable.

Another badass car that we will not see in the States. &#*) #)(&% &%*@ (#$&) #&(% &^(!!!!
I'd have one in a minute. 3-cyl. version please. :) Hell, RWD, small, aerodynamic? Probably handles like a dream. :) Love the design, (well, except the wheels, easy enough to fix) put a little spoiler on the back, a little airdam on the front, all done. :) Interior looked good too.
Sigh.

Huh -- where can you buy one of those for $2,000? I recently paid US$1,200 for a rebuilt 1.6NA. I find it hard to believe that a 1.4TDI would only be a little more expensive... If it's true, I want one.

They do share the 4cyl bolt pattern, and I belive they are importing them from the czech republic. I don't know if that includes frieght or not? Mark or Dave will have to fill in that one. Dave (of passenger performance) imported one for a customer that is going into a '77 rabbit.

I have yet to post the exact price of the 1.4L that Dave (Pass. Perf.) is importing... it's up to him if he wants to disclose it. In a regular VW shell it'll be a very nice economical & mild performance motor. Having to deal with only three cylinders is a plus.
