Title: AAZ power?
Post by: stewardc on February 15, 2013, 11:44:52 am
I'm wondering what you guys are putting out for power with an AAZ. I need accurate figures and mods that you have done.

No idea, no dyno anywhere near.

Definitely more torque than a stock AHU/ALH. I'd guesstimate around 180 ft.lbs.

Stock AAZ, K&N, down pipe exhaust. Fully turned up 1.6/1.9 IP hybrid.

Good start.

If yours is bored out to 2.0 and has a real deal Giles TD pump then I guesstimate you have an easy 180-200 crank torque.

Also, a stock AAZ is ~107 ft.lbs.

Real Giles pump, ported head, Garrett T3 running 22 psi, PP downpipe and 2.25" Magnaflow exhaust. Some on here say they have 300 ft lbs from an AAZ (daily driven) and I'm just wondering what more I can do?

Sounds like you are pushing more towards 140-150HP and 245+Ft-Lbs.  Up the boost a bit, change to a 2.5 turbo-back, and IIRC you still need to add an intercooler(?), then you can easily push 160/270+.  Go for a better trans for those numbers unless you are very careful on applying power and engaging the clutch on acceleration.

What is your main bolt length?  Or are you running main studs?

Yes, an intercooler is still needed but I do mainly highway driving and am easy on a vehicle. I'm presently on my 4th 020 trans (Missing Linkz shifter) but not from hard launches. That second-gear-crunch cure is eluding me. Next step is an 02A with cable shift. On the bottom end, and throughout, are ARP studs.

Okay, so you know what to do as far as solving the trans problem.  Hit me up and I'll give you some conversion part #s and links if you want.  Good picks on the stud hardware, also.
And if you want to go big on power, I'd suggest an AWIC solution, but a simple air-air is fine if that is what you'd rather to.  Some folks use Starion ICs, and some have even used same-side exit ones from GM-built Saab 900s IIRC.  I can't remember all of the other company OEM fits you can do, but anything over 18-20 lbs is too much for an OEM vw 1.8t side mount.  Forum search function is your friend, and there's a thread for MK1 IC solutions on the Vortex. :)

Oh, and www.frozenboost.com (http://www.frozenboost.com) has been mentioned as a good source of IC parts, both AAIC and AWIC.

I'd appreciate those part numbers when you get a minute. I also have this Saab Blackstone intercooler with the metal end tanks....hopefully to be installed this summer.

Running more than about 15 psi without an intercooler doesn't do much except heat the intake air.  Above that point, removing the heat with an intercooler does a whole lot more for increasing the charge density than running more boost.

A super cooled 15psi will be much better off than a hot 20+. And by super cooled, I mean a AWIC that can cool your charge air to near ambient!! :D

Doesn't anyone have accurate HP/Torque figures for a built AAZ? I heard rumours Giles has an AAZ daily with 300 torque. Anyone seen it?

torque numbers don't matter that much.  if u google and even search the forum i've seen alot of dyno plots for aaz.  i forget his username but there is a german on here with a mk2 aaz with nearly 200whp.  jeremys guesses for your engine sound really close imo for what u have done.

Do some research into water/methanol injection too. Acts as a chemical intercooler, and adds power, depending on the meth percentage.

I'm looking into a two-nozzle system, one very small one pointed right at the turbo impeller, and one larger in the intake misting into the manifold.

Some light reading here:

Another pre-turbo meth injection believer :)
