I am looking for a stainless steel downpipe for my 88 Jetta 1.6 TD. Does anyone know a source?
Thank you for your help,
Trevor

Correct me if Im wrong but I was always under the impression that stainless is a no no for a Diesel as they constantly crack due to the vibration, it isn't as forgiving as normal steel.

Dude, check out the vendor's forum and get a in contact with Passenger Performance located in British Columbia, Canada. They make there's in house.

don't think they are offering stainless yet but i could be wrong. i got mine from them but it wasn't stainless. they are the only non-OE option i know of other than making it yourself or paying a shop to make a one-off.

And its really pretty too :D

I have emailed and called them but no response. Are they still in business?
-
Yup they are deffinatly still in business, I talked to Dave 15min ago.
He mentioned that because he is so busy in the shop fabricationg and doing custom builds, his "forum" time has suffered greatly, but is trying to return all his phone calls and e-mails.
Dave says that he has no current plans to produce a SS version of the downpipe, he says they would cost alot more, and be more prone to cracking as such they are not in the works.
What PP does have in the works is a 1.4TDI into a 77 rabbit with a 6 speed, and Dave sold his PD130 and bought a 2.0L 16V PD with matching 6 speed for his Caddy, just to mention a few things going on there.
In some ways it makes me miss being around there, but $$$ talks, and the lower mainland just can't compete.

Yeah sorry I havent been posting or getting back on my emails quick. What dvst8r said is true, I am just swamped with stuff. been making a couple compound setups, some custom equal lenght exhaust manifolds, a 3cylinder 1.4 PD tdi swap in a 77 rabbit and my 2litre 16v PD swap and tdi 6 spd in my caddy. Plus all the usual orders and regular maintainence. Like posted above not planning on making stainless manifolds or downpipes at this point due to cracking and stuff, the mildsteel doesn;t crack with the heat and weight as much as stainless does, and stainless is really heavy, but that doresn;t matter much. Oh yeah and its really expensive, its more econmical to make stuff out of mild steel and than have it ceramic coated.

Techtonics Tuning is now offering a 1.6 TD down pipe in stainless steel for the A-1 Chassis, it incorporates a 2.25"x 6" flex, brace, short shift lever (for clearance purposes) and was made to use with there current 2.25" exhaust systems. Their website is www.techtonicstuning.com You can find it in there down pipe section, part number 251.224. There will be a picture of it on their web site by tomorrow. A Stainless A-2 version will follow later this week.

That's interesting seeing a big name like Techtonics recognizing IDIs just now. Just out of curiousity, are you affiliated with them?

I'm looking forward to the '77 w/ 1.4 TDI. A Rabbit 1.4 TDI swap was one of my dream car to own about a year ago.. I just don't have the resources for that project yet, but it's great seeing a local do it. Can't wait to get my hands on its ECU for a little chip tuning . The fact that the 1.4L TDI is rated 90hp stock is surprising to me (our NA VE 1.9L TDI is rated 90hp).

the TT pipe is stainless, 2.25" (not 2.5"), but costs $100us more (for comparison).
-
Yeah, its about time isn't it? I work for TT, and finally got them convinced to make a down pipe for the IDI. We were considering making it in 2.5" but, don't really feel that 2.5" tubing would be benificial for the small 1.6L engine, however I hope to do some dyno testing on that. I would like to hear what you guys think. Now maybe for the 1.9 IDI in the A-1 chassis we will make a 2.5" set up.

nice work! :)

How many cylinders is the 1.4? Does the 3 cyl share the same tranny bolt pattern as the 4?
Andrew
It is 3cyl, and yes it shares the same bolt pattern.

All I can say is Thanks! I was on the phone w/ TT a bit over a year ago & was told there was a TD mk1 in there getting fitted with a DP. I asked if something was going to be made but I guess nothing was definite back then. I was just building the TD Jetta at the time & could not locate the front pipe that clips on the cast iron DP from the turbo & goes under the car. I finally was in touch with someone in Germany that walked into a dealer & bought me the part off the shelf. I was able to complete the car. The factory front pipe was not clearanced for a front sway bar & I have one on my Jetta. It makes noise every time I accelerate at 1/2 throttle or more.
I checcked out the pics earlier tonight & the SS DP looks awesome. I do have a few questions:
What is the brace at the top by the turbo flange?
Is the SS prone to crack there?
If it was to crack some years down the road will TT replace it?
Will the DP clear a front factory swaybar from a cabbby or GTI?
I think i read earlier... this is made to fit with your (cough) "cat back" 2.25 SS system?
Thanks again, consider one sold.
Nick

Thanks for all the responses. I'll wait for Dave to respond about the regular steel downpipe, but I am in serious need of a new exhaust ASAP.... don't want to leave pieces of my current one on the road!

What would you like to know about the DP's? I responded to the email you sent me.
