Hey guys, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Lately I have noticed that my turbo sounds way louder, and I mean louder by ,a loud whine coming from it. I can hear it in the car while driving at highway speeds( barely hear it) but its really loud when starting off in the car when the turbo spools up. As I switch gears and let off the gas pedal it goes away and comes right back as soon as I am onto the gas pedal again. The harder I push it the louder it gets and obviously quiets down when the RPM's are down enough not requiring the turbo. I lifted the hood and moved the accelerator on the IP and its quite loud and sound like its coming from the turbo/rear of the engine area.
What do you guys think it is? If its the turbo, can it be rebuilt or am I better off trying to get another one? Could it possibly be anything else besides the turbo? Is it ok to drive this way or should I not use it?
Any help would be great.
Thx in advance

the only advice i can offer is maybe check the shaft for play before diving into it too far?

Agree.
FWIW, tm53 reports the rebuild place in Ohio does a good job at a good price. http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=31392.0

Hello. Thx for the replies. As for the hole in the exhaust..,what area are you talking about..turbo to handbrake? Are u talking around the hand brake area of the exhaust or is that a name for a specific part of the exhaust?
Let me know
Cheers

The downpipe typically rots out around where the C clips hook up.

So I had a chance to screw with it today and I pulled the tubing from the turbo and the turbo had minimal play. I have no idea how much it's supposed to have but it hard to judge with such a small opening. I would call it little to no play. Then I started the car, plugged the exhaust and no major leaks just around the ones I har band aided up for now. Then I did the stethoscope screwdriver trick and my alternator idler pulley bearing is shot. I removed the belt and ran the car again and all is quiet like normal. Ill get a new bearing on the 2nd and I'm good to go again. Thx for all your help
Happy New Year
