Title: Two questions......

Q1....I've read that Ultra low sulpher diesel will be in use later this year, what does sulpher do in the fuel, what effect will this have on the old IDI's. I'vw read conflicting opinions about it providing lubrication for the IP.  Q2....I've got an'84 Jetta 2 dr,1.7 gasser (besides the '84 bunny),if I try to shut the door with windows rolled up, the car seems so airtight that the doors won't close(unless you really slam them), but if you crack a window down about an inch, they close fine.....anyone experience this?....what's is going on????/

Dunno about Q2, but on Q1...

ULSD will have less lubrication... when it's first refined. However, there's a lubrication spec that Bosch designed your IP for, and ULSD still has to meet that spec. ALL ULSD will be additivized to meet that.

I would watch the seals on your IP, ULSD could cause them to shrink and weep, but that's not too likely, as the seals would have been replaced during the transition to LSD.

When was the first change over to LSD?...I use Stanadyne diesel additive in my fuel, so does that make the whole sulpher level 'thing ' a non-issue?

The change-over was in 92-93.

Lubrication is a total non-issue if you're running additive.

The seal issue, OTOH, is still present, but I doubt that it'll be a problem. If the seals on your injection pump do weep from ULSD, and you *HAVE* to run your car, then you can add automatic transmission fluid to the fuel (not much! And those with TDIs who are reading, DON'T DO IT - you can't really pull that off on a direct injection diesel, but on the old IDI's, it's an acceptable practice) until you can get your IP rebuilt.

There's a requirement to drop from 500ppm to 15ppm sulfur in September 2006.  The ULSD will allow more of the modern european diesels to be imported -- apparently the high sulfur content of US diesel kills some of the new emissions control devices that they have an them in europe -- sort of like leaded gas killed catalytic converters.

A number of fuel refiners have already switched, and I've heard of a few people in California who have destroyed their injection pump's because of the lack of lubricity in the ultra low sulfer fuel.  If you run biodiesel blends or add a lubrication additive to your fuel, it shouldn't be an issue.  I never run straight diesel from the pump in either of mine, so I'm not too worried.

Normal with good seals, especially prevelent on the 2 doors IMHO.  You might leave the airvents/heater/defrost open and see if that helps releave some of the pressure while shutting, but I had the same thing with my '84 gti.  Just wait until you and the passenger shut the doors at the exact same time and niether of them close.  That's a fun one.
If it really doesn't feel right to you, you can always adjust the door latch post.  And ensure that either the plastic sheath or tape or similar is around the post, if it is down to bare metal it is really no fun to shut (clunky).

yea thats a good thing,,doors closing hard whenwindows up,,gotta move the air out somewhere,,yea thats fun 2 people closing doors at same time heehee,,iknow me+deohave done that,,now usually vw owners "inthe know"wait for one person to close their door first,,,and w/norust,,its hard to do,,,consider it a good thing,and show friends how wellbuilt  the vw's are!!!!

It's kinda weird that my '84 Rabbit doesn't do this, or is this an example of German build quality vs. Westmoreland?

Well my gti did it and it was westmoreland.  But my pickup doesn't.  I think it has to do with the smaller door area, and the fact that the seals aren't as good as they once were.  Is your '84 a 2 or 4 door? :)

Both Jetta and Rabbit are 2 door, or is the Rabbit considered a 3 door because of the hatch?.....

That's a real old-timey Vdub thing. When I was but a lad my family found it was next to impossible to close the door on our brand new '62 beetle without a window open  8)
