I know this may not be the place to put this. I plan on changing to an 02A tranny, if someone has a 02a 4 cyl. starter for this laying around, can you give me a rough distance from the mounting that it would mount to on the transmission with, to the end of the gear?
I bought a pricey starter $400 or so, and I want to see if there is anyway I can use it once changed to an 02A.

It so happens I have one here at my desk. :-) From the flange to the end of the shaft is 2.7 inches. From the flange to the end of the gear is 1.3 inches.

Thanks!

o2a vs o2o will not swap.. teeth on flywheel not same...

Not good, I guess that theory is out the window. I'll have to sell it, or trade it I guess.....

I looked over the starter again - does the 02a starter use 10 teeth for the gear? I know the auto tdi (2000-2005? - SR 34X) starter in my other car works with the pressure-plate to crank, flywheel to pressure plate of the 020.
This starter just has a snap ring and spline to hole onto the gear. If it's a 10 or 8 tooth gear I can maybe change it?

dude... simple.. if it was that easy... vw would not have changed it... hell they wet thru all the work to make ewer autos use the old 020 starter... why when 02a came out same year... its differet... hell old 02a starter like a 020 w/bushing... newer 02a goto a supported end...

Auto TDI starters will work for the 020 trans iirc from my adventures. But the manual TDI starter is 02A specific.

While we aren't on the subject, does anyone know what starter will work with my 096? Any way to tell short of just hooking it up and trying it?
-
Totally different. Solenoids will interchange, however...
