Hi again guys, got the pump seals in and back on the car...YIPES, big job, for me anyways. I have read so many posts on IP timing that my head is spinning. What is the proper way to time the pump when you have the adjustable pump sprocket? Do you require the dial tool or not? Some say do it the same as the ones with the adjustable pump body, while others say that with the adjustable sprocket you just line everything up and your good to go.
So the long and short of it is......How do I set the timing on my 96 AAZ?
By the way, its all back together and running fine, no leaks..yet! It just sounded a bit smoother before i took it all apart.....wondering about the timing. When everything is all lined up,#1 TDC, Cam locked, the pump line up hole is about 1/16" of center....could this be it?

Could very well be. The lock, and pins just are for getting it near close enough that you can make it run. If you want it to run right then you need to time it.

Those pumps don't require a gauge to time but you need to have the pump hole lined up perfectly. If you have a gauge you may as well use it though.

Ya, like I said, it seems to be running fine just sounds a little different then it did before. I will try to perfectly match up the timing hole and see if it makes a difference.........stay tuned!

So, re adjusted the timing again and its unbelievable what a difference adjusting only 1/32 of an inch can make. So for now i'm happy with just lining everything up as again its running very well! Hopefully my re-seal job holds!
One last question, on the adjustable IP sprocket, when your facing the sprocket from the passenger side of the car, is turning the pump shaft advancing or retarding the timing?

Turning the pump shaft clockwise would advance the timing.

can these sprockets be used on the 1.6's or tdi's?

Physically you can mount them. The offset is going to be off though, and without the matching pump body, you won't be able to lock them in the proper position.

so if I stuff the 1.6 guts into a 1.9 it will work?

Just use a 1.9 pump. Much less trouble.

All the 1.9 pumps I have seen with the adjustable pulley for timing have had the larger pump snout yes? Bbob you wish to use this on a 1.6 I presume? You will need the AAZ bracket to do so.

I don't think the aaz bracket fits the 1.6 engine. You would have to bore out a 1.6 bracket to fit the aaz pump snout.

Hmm. I disagree. I have a 1.6TD bracket on an AAZ in my driveway right now, and it was the larger snout pump style AAZ too. I do not know why, but I switched brackets so I could switch back to a twist-able pump instead of pulley.
So summary;
1996 AAZ block
1993 AAZ pump
1991 1.6TD bracket
