Title: Exhaust mani flip, who's done it?
Post by: burn_your_money on December 02, 2012, 08:32:49 am
Who has successfully done this on a non mk1 car? I'm considering doing it on my mom's B3 but all the threads I've read seem to indicate it's impossible. Has anyone actually done it?

I haven't done it either.  So I won't give any input!!! Haha I have heard it doesn't work either tho,  I've seen them on cross flow engines but they're not flipped for that.

Trapazoid flipped and adapted.

Took some machining to the flange where it bolts to the head to allow the intake manifold to bolt up, otherwise it interferes.

May I ask what benefits this would provide?  Ability to mount a larger turbo without risk of hitting the bulkhead?

It's usually done to allow a better intake manifold to be installed.

Ah, I see, that would allow a less aggressive bend in the intake manifold tubes where they connect to the head, helping airflow.  That's a cool idea; I'll keep that in mind if I ever get the chance to use it!

Gas intake is the usual suspect,

Something looking like this goofy setup?  Odd looking duck.

Off a Craigslist ad.

I wonder if R.O.R. was busy this weekend in an odd sort of welding way?

I don't like the looks of that exhaust manifold; looks like they just made it out of pipe, didn't bend the inner manifold pipe merges, and cut a hole where they all join and just welded the flange on.  Not very good for nonrestrictive gas flow.  DP needs work too, that sharp bend looks assty.

Dig the turbo and intake, though.  What turbo is that? (Sorry for OT ADD).

Come to think of it I have seen some folks run a K-jet mani on 1.6TD's with the injector holes plugged.  D ports really limit the AAZ/TDI crowd's options of doing the mani flip since they only seem to have those kind of ports.

the injector ports are in the head tho??

ive run a flipped manifold with an audi 2.0TD turbo.

you have to grind a bit of the flange away to make the manifold fit when its flipped..

believe i had to grind the intake a bit as well..

it CAN be made to work.. there isnt much gain to be had from it, unless you want a long runner intake manifold..

no Dale, i would NOT build something that hideous.. that manifold is horrid.

that turbo looks to be a chrysler T3 turbo..

I think he is talking about the cold start injector.
