Title: MkII 020 in a MkI: will it fit?

Will a late MkII 020 trans fit into a MkI? I've wondered about this, but never been able to find out for sure. I took some measurements off an 88 Jetta trans, and it seemed like there were some differences in the case casting, causing the offset of the axle flanges to be different. Can anyone tell me for sure?

AFAIK you need different mounts if you're going from 4 speed to 5 speed 020, and the rod change setup. and they will probably be 100mm PCD on the driveshaft flanges so you'd want some driveshafts out of a late A1 Cabrio

The 020 transmissions will fit, the case is pretty much the same.

But you will need to change the rest of the stuff, the bracketry and such for the mounts and linkage.

The reverse light switch is also different for the newer stuff (need to get a pigtail from a newer car and connect it to yours).

The axle flanges can be either 90 mm or 100 mm depending on what options you got, they seemed to use both throughout most of the production run of mk1 and mk2s so you need to measure it. And, if it's different, you need to change the axle flanges or use different axles (which are different between mk1 and mk2) that have the correct size end.

usually cars under 100hp, got 90mm flanges..

and cars 100hp or more, have 100mm flanges..
