Title: Miguel's '81 Jetta - "Sloth"
Post by: miguel.760ti on November 29, 2012, 01:12:33 pm
Hey all, I'm new to VWs and diesels. My buddy gave me his '81 Jetta after the motor locked up on him. Some of you may recognize this car haha, affectionately named Sloth (yes, like the Goonies)

As it sits

My main focus is to get this car running, I've found a 1.9 N/A locally that I'm gonna stick in there. Anybody have some tips/tricks they like to share with their 1.9 swaps into an MK1?

Future plans include - cleaning the car, it really wasn't taken good care of until my friend had it - get a decent audio system - new wheels - maybe a turbo build.

And I plan on keeping the car crooked :o it gives it character, plus the car tracked straight and drove fine despite the damage. :)

Picked up and hauled the 1.9 engine/mk2trans +other goodies to my buddy's house (where the car is stored), the dude was cool and had a sweet cabby and told stories about past diesel mk1s...

Hopefully tomorrow I can pull the 1.6 out and get everything cleaned up and ready

I'm a huge sucker for rat-look... are you going all out or just keeping her crooked?

It's gonna stay crooked!  :)

Yeah it's a stick, not sure if I'm gonna use it though since this car has the 5 speed with the tall 5th gear

The 1.9 pumps either came with a 50mm or 68mm mounting diameter. Mk1s only came with a 50mm so if your pump is 68mm you will need to build a custom mount or get a different pump. Building the custom mount is pretty easy though.

I don't know if  5 speed or turbo was the better mod on my car, they were both 'must have'.

The 1.9 didn't come with a pump, but I have all the 1.9 lines and mounts. The 1.6 has a resealed pump that I plan on reusing

Should work no problem.

Been a slow couple weeks. Scored a set of straight mk1 jetta fenders and ordered a whole crap ton of parts from autohaus to get ready for the 1.9.
The 1.6 should be out this weekend if weather cooperates...
