Title: What's it worth?
Post by: mystery3 on November 26, 2012, 10:30:23 pm
I'm planning to part ways with my caddy soon and am curious about pricing it. I've become too busy to spend any time working on upkeep and improvements and am leaning towards a tacoma   :o  ::)  :'( I know I'll miss the fuel economy (WHY CAN'T WE BUY DIESEL HILUX IN THIS COUNTRY!!!) and character but I can't afford the downtime required of an old truck right now and don't have a place to store it so...
I plan to drop the motor and transmission to store for future project and sell the truck as a rolling shell along with a bed load of spares. Here's what I have so far.

Pros:
-newish (5k) brake booster, master cylinder, drums, front pads and rotors have about 15k
-newish (15k) control arms with prothane
-14" mkII steelies with near new Sumitomo HTR P001 A/S 185/60r14
-recently replaced the steering column bearing
-semi recent heater core (30k)
-no structural rust, great looking strut towers, non-leaking windshield, fuel door area is very clean
-newish (5k) driver side axle
-generally a pretty straight/clean truck
-neuspeed lowering springs in front

Cons:
-basically stripped interior, ugly dash
-bad paint
-a bit of body work needed on the driver side rear, between rear arch and tail lamp
-bad driver side door (clean door to be included in potential sale)
-some surface rust on underside, I think it may have lived near the ocean for a time

Spares:
-lumber rack
-2 tailgates both better than the one on the truck, neither great, extra set of really clean hinges
-2 solid rear windows to replace the leaky slider, both oe one clean, other with bad peeling 80's purple tint
-pair of seats, great foam, sun damage near headrest area
-fuel filler door
-pair of shocks for the rear, used but in good shape
-late mkI dash black and uncracked
-clean driver side door mentioned earlier
-I'm sure there are a few other things

Anyway as a project car with a clean California title and up to date registration (probably pno status by the time I get around to selling it) whatdya think she's worth? I'll perhaps try to get some pics in a few days time. Thanks for your opinions and feedback!

Hard to call without a motor.  Is it in Sunnyvale?
I have a friend who might be interested if he has a viable motor lying around.

I don't know, but I think it would sell easier running and driving.  I would sell it that way and find another engine. When I buy something like that, I have to factor in the cost of the tow and the hassle.  You also cut out a lot of the "noobs" selling it that way- you already have to know what you are doing to buy a shell.

is it a diesel title? (assuming it is, if so I may have a buyer if the price is right)

The BAR process to title as diesel is super easy in CA.

It is a diesel title and in Sunnyvale.

I also forgot to mention I've 2 or 3 tail lights 1 in excellent condition and another 1 or 2 in decent shape, and a passenger side bed corner/tail light housing.

I want to keep the motor as I've a bunch of money into it, much more than the truck is likely to sell for complete and running and I plan to build a rabbit in a year or two or three.

Thanks for the feedback! Keep it coming! 745, Funktron shoot me a PM if you might be interested have a lead I can get some pics and the price will definitely be flexible, when I get another truck I won't really have room to keep this one.

To me maybe 300 dollars at most, even with lots of spare parts it will take alot of time energy and money to put into any kind of decent shape, but that's just me

Thank you for the feedback, given that what would you expect to pay for a super clean running truck?

Honestly if the figures I'm looking at are as low as $300 I'll just ship the easy to sell bits, give away or dump the bigger spares and send the shell to the scrapper, that's an easy $500 right there.

I paid $1200 for my running 1.6D 2 years ago. It needed a suspension refresh and eventually a new engine (building an AAZ up!) and the interior was decent. Got it from someone in OAkland.

With no engine, needing paint, needing interior, etc., I would think something like $500 MAX. I think most offers you'll get are from "seasoned" vw diesel people who tend to be on the cheap side.

You're probably better off parting it out. It's a shame though to scrap a Caddy! Piece of forgotten American history :/

My friend in Felton was doing a home repaint, HG+timing belt, and consistently getting a bit over $4000 on Ebay.

2-5 grand. Haha I'm not always cheap. If I really wanted a nice one I'd be willing to fork out the dough the head aches and money it saves is well worth it

Why don't you just throw out a number & show lots of pix & see if you get a taker?

I'd say < $500 seems legit for a rolling shell, without an interior.. ;)

I mean I bought a clean '88 1.6 TD for $500, not running.. and drove it home 350kms that same day. So really, what is it worth to the right person is what you want to hear.

I agree rollers/projects etc of this vintage and not rare should all be priced in the sub $500 range I'm just looking for input on what the shell with spares might be worth to anyone, when selling a project it's all about finding the right person anyhow right?

Shorttimer - when I've my new truck and all the bits that'll go with the caddy sorted I'll take pics and post it to the classifieds but right now I'm in the planning phase.
