Title: injector removal problem when car has N/A pump?
Post by: derekp on November 14, 2012, 11:21:37 am
I put an N/A pump on my eco 92 jetta a while back.
Head gasket woes causing me to remove the head - I wanted to do compression test before pulling head to make sure my only issue was the oil leaking out of front side of head.

I discovered I could not put my socket on #2 cyl injector - the aneroid (space ship) on the NA pump is in the way

So - how have any of you dealt with this? I'm not sure that I could even get a box end wrench on that thing even with the lines off the car.

(life must move on - I pulled the head without doing my comp test - oh well....)

You could have tried loosening the pump and pulling it all the way away from the engine. Not sure if it would have been enough or not though.

On mine I can just slip the socket over the injector and THEN connect the extension. No way I can get it on with the extension attached due to interference with my LDA.

can you guys tell me - 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive socket and what the overall length of the socket you use?
Appreciate it - I only have 1/2 inch drive socket no way will it fit at all.
thanks.

I have one car with the turbo version (LDA) and one with the altitude version (ADA). (The other cars have the lower IP covers.)

I use a MiT 1/2" drive deep impact socket. The socket is probably ~80MM tall and 34mm wide. It just barely fits in the injector-well .

I mark the pump position and turn the top as far from the valve-cover as it will go.

Get an adapter that goes from 3/8ths to 1/2 inch and use the 3/8th extension.  Adapters go both ways.  I use them all the time but mostly to reduce from larger size but on occasion it helps to go the other way.  As in this case.

Impact sockets are thicker wall so don't use it if space is tight. (ask me how I know) Since getting a 12 point 27 mm deep socket that's much thinner wall than the impact (from Lowes) no more clearance isaues.
