Only seen one or two of these before, but yeah my caddy's going to get an Audi 80 subframe, double wishbone suspension, longitudinal gearbox mated to a LR 300TDi powered 1Z TDi (which i'll probably need quite a bit of help with. all M- conversions always seem so vague)
Starting with an all new chassis in the bed, as most of the original chassis was rotten through
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/IMG_6356_640x478.png)
the subframe mocked in place :P
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/IMG_6346_640x478.png)
4 link suspension I'd almost finished, which will be no more :(
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/IMG_6296_640x478.png)
the front so far, will probably get molded into one piece. actually i fancy doing a whole removable fibreglass front end too, but that's not important just yet!
Going to be mainly chassis design and building in the next few weeks, the fin stuff with my original engine will be later (.240 nozzles, VNT20, best flowing intake manifold I can find, head porting etc) this is the first time i've ever worked on cars, let alone serious diesel engine mods, so excuse me if i ask for a fair bit of guidance with some things!

I rate this thread 'hell yeah!'
-
write the thread in welch so we no you are truely in wales
-
YOU have your work cut out there , good luck with your build , you will be going throw the SVA/BIFA test with that build , if i was going to do a build like yours i would never post pics on line , big bro could be watching and V5 have been removed by dvla (8 points build), just my 2$ worth
-
thank you!
rydw i ddim yn siariad cymraeg! maar myjn moeder is nederlands, und ich bin deutchs lernen auch. :p
Not sure what you mean with removing the V5? Yes it'll be getting IVA tested, and the V5 will be to prove what the 'donor vehicle' as such is

could do with some advice on setting up independent rear suspension on the caddy anyone ever doe chassis or suspension designing?
looking at something like this, slightly modified since. having to run twin wishbones due to the air bags, would run macpherson ohterwise
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/MK1CaddyIRSRear.jpg)
-
I'm not sure why u can't run bags with macphearson strut?
-
I'm not sure why u can't run bags with macphearson strut?
theres LOTS of VWs running bagged struts...
-
i can and do on the front, the trouble is i have a pair of regular type ones for the rear.
To buy and import 2 hollow and 2 straight bags cost me £440 ($580 at a guess?) bloody mad, so not going to import another pair in a hurry! priced up, another pair of hollow bags would be $430 :(
while we have plentiful cheap fuel pumps, y'all have damn cheap air ride stuff!
the fronts, custom machined ally mounting plates on cheap nasty coilovers

-
I do not want to seem too critical or like I am telling you what to do, but to me, the time saved by buying the bags would be well worth it for how much more simple it would make the job. How ever you may enjoy the fabrication and simply using what u have.
-
Modifying a Caddy rear for struts would not be that much less fab.
-
this is true ^, $430 + import tax is no small amount (on my wages!)
I'm half considering making myself some tubular front wishbones :D
Unsure whether i'll be using the audi subframe anyway, seeing as it only has wishbone mounts and one gearbox mount on it...
engine arrives tuesday hopefully, so will see then
-
so my engine finally turned up, f*cking useless company.
even better, turned up at home, well the end of the track, with no way for me to move it anywhere.
popped to work, borrowed the engine crane, fixed said engine crane then set to work getting this huge sod into the golf. which was a *** of a job, naturally
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/20121123_122155_640x480.jpg)
(golf is standard suspension, got some crazy rake going on from that)
got it mostly in, wasn't going any further so chucked some rope around it and moseyed up to the farm. was a bit easier to get out on the other side...
*** it's huge :p

bit more work done since-
machined pump bracket

for pump :)
got my top wishbones and mocked up
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/20121201_140118_640x480.jpg)
started on an engine subframe
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/20121202_160540_640x480.jpg)
poly front mount

Nice.
-
x2 on said niceness. Where will you be running your radiator? and will you turn your old engine bay into a front trunk?
Can't wait to see this thing power-sliding around roundabouts! :)
-
thanks ;D
Radiator and charge cooler radiator will be up front still, as with the fuel tank, water pump(s), chrome spare wheel and all the other important bits to try and keep some weight over the front.
Not sure about roundabout drifting yet! considering it'll probably be maybe 40/60 weight distribution, with 225 tyres on 16x9's on the back, getting the tyres loose will be a bit of a challenge.
Really struggling with getting the engine running though, got to try and source the other half of a ALH pump pulley for my landy pump. then i have no idea what i'm doing really as far as timing/setting it up goes :-[
But hoping to see at least 200HP 350-400nm with the built AHU (one day)
-
kinda promised myself to have the engine in and running by the end of the year.
Certainly won't get it fully mounted yet as i'm short 2 engine mounts and a gearbox mount, and also no idea what i should use either
Anyway my biggest problem is that i have no idea what I'm doing as far as timing up, well any engine really, but especially not with this M-TDi pump
Crank timing by lining up the arrows in the bottom pulley? or on the flywheel - where?
camshaft with a piece of 4mm plate i believe
Now the pump is where i'm having trouble. I'm going to have a go machining a 3rd hole in the landrover hub as i'm having no luck finding an ALH hub. but becuase the LR hub has no slot for the key, how do i know where it's supposed to go?
And I'm also struggling understanding the timing, using a DTI in the end of the pump. I have a standard DTI gauge, am i right to assume that it's supposed to be a fuel pump specific one that threads in?
New wheels arrived from germany anyway, 16x7.5 & 16x9 8) so had to mock them up. 5x100 though unfortunately

Must admit i'd forgotten about updating the build on here!
It's had quite a few different plan changes so far

new daily, 110hp ASV Octavia. getting a real irritating limp mode problem off it
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/20130126_080459_640x480.jpg)
top wishbones TIG'd to take poly bushes

painted a few engine bits
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/20130217_113436_640x480.jpg)
angle grinder and a plasma cutter are dangerous tools!

making a complete new tube chassis, as i'm sick of working around unibody crap. this will have top and bottom wishbones for the front and rear, as well as the steering, suspension and be built into the cab with mounting for the roll cage too (probably)

What is happening? Is the Caddy still being built? Love to see progress. Very cool project
-
quite a lot...!
The GRP arches have gone, they will be replaced.
A lot more of the shell has gone
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/20130525_172524_800x600.jpg)
a month or two ago, the 'plug' for the fiberglass. very much not finished yet!
The sharp eyed might notice it's a MK2 front on there
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/20130505_152342_800x600.jpg)
Rear end modified for being a fair bit lower. cutout for the diffuser underneath
car will now be fully tube chassis (bar the box section i guess!), one piece GRP front end, GRP rear bed panels, will be remaking probably all wishbones as i've learnt a lot about setting up a car to handle recently!
start of the first iteration, wasn't happy with it
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/20130721_164445_800x600.jpg)
as of this weekend. new lower chassis cut and part welded. main hoop and a-bars bought, got the hoop and a diagonal tacked on.
put the engine in place to get an idea
(http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af322/43655/20130825_173525_800x600.jpg)
Got to work out what wheels i want, then work out suspension geometry for front and rear.
Fronts are Mustang II Wilwood ProSpindles with hubs made in work. rears will be Octavia hubs on self made uprights, probably billet ally
