I was messing with my climate control earlier this week, and just thought id post a pic of what the helpful PO did to remove A/C from his car-

why unbolt the evaporator when you can hacksaw off the fitting and twist off the other?

...because it is a hell of a lot easier than taking the dash apart? ;D

But then why not just leave the lines in place or nip them at the firewall? Maybe he was angry at the evaporator?

uh, when i installed the engine in my Jetta.. i had NO INTENTIONS of ever hooking it back up..
im honestly going to remove the evaporator when i find a non-a/c heater box and fan motor..
so, ive done the same thing.. used a non-a/c block plate over the cut off connections..
not like you can see it on my car, but i know its there..

on the jetta I just sold I took out all the ac stuff forward the fire wall just un screwed it from the coupler block just in case anyone ever wanted to re install it.

on my jetta coupe there is a long list, but most of it all surrounds a windshield replacement someone did, they installed the windshield seal that requires a chrome strip pressed in to spread the seal and seal everything up, but they never installed the strip, so water leaked on the fuse box as commonly happens on mk1 cars. then when things stopped working they added a bunch of extra switches to bypass the non working fuse panel, and also a bunch of nasty jumpers under the dash. there was tons of extra bs wiring through the engine bay for a hacked up headlight relay install, it was sad haha. i replaced the fuse box with a brand new one and all the wiring except for the loom that runs to the tail lights, miraculously everything started working again even stuff i didn't know didn't work!!

That's how I delete AC. Old stuff like that doesn't usually come apart easily, and I'd rather wear out my sawsall blade than my knuckles.

thats what I was thinking, it could be that it was horribly corroded, but it seems that every single piece of this car I look at or repair, was horribly done once in its past.
A testament to the durability of the mk2 in my opinion. Twisting off the AC fitting fits right in line with the kid getting the car airborne and blowing out the front suspension, blowing the motor, ect ect.
Somehow, there were minimal dents in it though.
