Title: Eco diesel weird noise at startup possibly valve related Now coolant issue
Post by: bbob203 on October 20, 2012, 04:18:40 pm
When I start it up it makes this noise otherwise runs good

starter solenoid disengaging when you let off the key?

maybe your hydro lifters are starting to tick, just like every other VW with hydro lifters..

does it just make noise for a few seconds, then go away?

Sounds pretty normal and diesely to me.

yea its like squeaky duck quaking noise. right at start up then I get a low backround tick when running.

ROR has already diagnosed it:  starter slow to kick back out (take it apart and clean it) and worn, crudded up or otherwise lazy lifters.

The starter will get worse in cold weather. Better to deal with it now.

√ and √. Should I be concerned with lifters? any remedy? rebuild the head? gonna be driving a 4 hoir round trip tomorow and a 12 hour round trip wenesday. thanks for the input. this is a noise the specific engine has made since I got it and always thought it was from the ip

My 88 1.6TD has a good tick going on, but I am not overly worried about it. It is definitely coming from the engine, but alas if she pops.. Its getting a M-TDI and a Rover pump ;).

What weight oil are you using? I thought this noise was a few seconds after start only? Nearly every hydro vw 4 cyl I have ever worked on will clack the lifters around for a few seconds at start-up based on temperature and weight of oil used.

I have 15w40 conventional in the 88, 5w50 full synthetic in the 84 AAZ, and 0w40 full synthetic in the AHU M-TDI. Out of all of them the AHU has the most km's by about a 125,000 difference on the AAZ.. and it has no lifter ticking. Must have upgraded the design by the time they got to their third diesel engine generation.

had a feeeling it was the solenoid...

my GTI does the same thing..

solenoid is getting lazy, and probably the bushing getting worn..

Ya, my solution to hyd. lifter problems is simply not to rebuild any more hyd. engines. Life is so much better in their absense. I love my newly rebuilt gas digifant block mated to an older GTI Rabbit head. Plus, it runs like a molested chimp.

It has a tick when running. But it also has this squeaky duck quack noise for one second at start up(which i thought might be lifters) but now think it is something starter related now that i think more about where the sound is coming from and that you guys mentioned it. Otherwise the sucker runs like a champ. Ip has an air leak somewhere in it but only enough for the backflow on the in flow to get a air bubble in it once i shut it down and it isn't pumping a sporadic burst of bubbles in the out flow. When i get the fuel pump installed it wont be any issue. AND when i get myself a resealed td pump ;D

tick when running is lifters..

wait till its about time to change oil, and add 1qt of ATF or MMO in the oil, run it for a week, usually cleanes up the sticky lifter..

yea I got some mmo. stuff does wonders in saturn motors. this engine sat dry for a bit in my garage so it might be it.

oh, definitely, if it sat dry..

have you rally had this engine up to operating temp for more than a few minutes yet?

my Audi GT clattered like no other when i fired it up after sitting, and i thought it had bad lifters..

after i drove it for a week, they got ALOT quieter...

a quart of ATF and another week, and the lifters were SILENT..

Welp just went on a four hour round trip drive thru the kentucky mountains  all highway there. 1/2 county roads coming home. I rode in the boost zone fairly a lot. Esp on the last 10 minutes before home. I wasn't really gunning it hard but was riding out the boost every chance i could. I get home pop my hood to check the fluids and my coolant reservoir burped up the whole dang reservoir thru the relief vent.. WHY?

edit: my fan also kicked on once i shut my car OFF and ran for a minute then turned off once the coolant was done puking.

air bubble somewhere..

coolant was not circulating..

my car has done that before..

i was pulling onto I5, and hard on the boost (1300*f, ~20psi) and my temp gauge just started going up, up, up...

pulled over, waited for the turbo to cool down a bit, and shut it down as soon as my EGTs werent going to boil the oil out of my turbo once it quit spinning..

its never done it since.. it just burped once, fan came on, then it was fine after it burped..

i also changed my expansion tank cap as well, doubt that did anything tho..

Well that reassuring! I NEED MORE BOOST!  :o

Also i Think that i did isolate the squeaky duck noise to the starter i pushed started my car rolling down a hill today and it didn't squeak squeal like it does when i starter start it.

uh, how does an air bubble in the cooling system equate to needing more boost?

be careful with that little K14.. its not good for massive amounts of boost..

anything above 15psi and its just pumping lots of hot air...

I haven't put on a boost gauge yet. whats the stock boost on it?

Would a 1.8t intercooler do me any good? Local vw shop has a pile of them.

i just replied to the other thread you started..

im not a fan of any intercooler with plastic end tanks..

anything higher than 15psi or so, and you risk blowing the tanks off the intercooler..

there are MUCH BETTER options out there.. see the other thread for a complete response..

I just took out my starter. The gear head part is worn out. Looks like ill be getting a new one tomorrow. Thoughts on remans from auto parts stores?

no new starter lubed it up and it work great put some grease on the gears and shaft. 8)
